    new dash

spent some time yesterday fitting my new dash wood ,found quite a few differences with early and late mk1, wood for the centre vent is machined differently on the back and the new requires fettling to make it fit not to much aggro also there is a large sheet metal frame visible when you remove the centre console ,its bolted to the top underside of dash and the tunnel as well don't remember seeing this on any other later stags the dash moulding underside is even shaped as well to accommodate it. I've employed Julian's idea of moving the choke to the right hand side as well but its a bit tight round the air hose Julian ? the panel required drilling for this as choke threaded part was 13mm and the switches when moving such as the hard top rear screen switch are also different .I don't use a hard top so the switch wires are disconnected and taped back to the loom and the switch is now available for another use.one fault I've found when doing all this is I have a seized heater cable or flap the three controls for heater are left and right up and down they are fine and the horizontal side to side which continually pops out of its retainer and will not budge so no hot air at the moment not worried but swmbo will be ! I assume this operates a flap on top somewhere and its seized solid any ideas? I also removed the cigarette lighter which I only use as a supply to fed phone or sat nav etc ,this was always a pain since I had the car trying to twiddle to get the power connection ,I've now installed a proper modern outlet which looks good and is reliable .eBay less than £5.I need to install the clock section today this will take longer as I've bought all new clocks and they require some wiring and soldering also need to fit a new speedo cable but that not here yet. Will post some pics later Steve.

    Hi Steve,

The frame is only on earlier stags, mine was built late '71 and has one.

My horizontal heater control was seizing up, problem was the heater water valve needed removing and cleaning as it had almost seized.

      Hi Steve,

Sorry, been out all day and only just seen your post. Yes, it was a bit tight around the vent pipe that goes up to the screen vent however I don't remember how I sorted that I'm afraid. Just been out to look but can't see unfortunately. One thing though is that I have removed my right hand eyeball vent, and the pipe leading to it, to fit a clock in its place.

As for the cables, the temperature one is the one that usually pops out, often after the heater valve has seized. It should have a specially strong clip to hold it - look at LDparts website for details. The cable goes out to the right and onto the heater valve there.

Sorry, I'm just going out again now but if I can help any more please contact me later.

      Cheers

      Julian

steve my valve was seized. stripped it down a new o ring and some vaseline on the valve when i put it back i also put a similar fixing to what is used on the tonneau lid release cables on the rod for the heater valve as extra security. if my memory serves me well.
