    Advice on a dizzy please

Won't bore you all with the whole saga, but most of last year the MM had a misfire. I would have gone back to Paul Place in Wickham (about 25 miles away) but he's now moved to Milton Keynes (about 90 miles away) as he is experienced with the RV8, Mallory ignition and Edelbrock carbs and got it running really well in 2011. So instead had lots of local places look at it who made it worse so it still misfired but also went back to it's old tricks of not wanting to start.

The last guy I used found that the weights in the Mallory twin point dizzy were getting stuck, resolved that to an extent and got it to run about 95% as good as I have had it but only on V Power, whereas it used to be happy on 95 - I know that is timing related but retarding / advancing the ignition just makes it worse. The last time I did a proper run was immediately after that to last years Brands Hatch event and I had no issues that day, but using it a few times locally after it seemed to have moments of hesitancy or misfire (I couldn't decide which) and I got fed up with it and put it away. It's now on a SORN and with no MOT.

It's had more new coils, points and condensors on it than I can remember, and have just described all these symptoms to a company advertising in the magazine who are very local, and they suggested replacing the dizzy - makes logical sense. I need to be very careful in terms of money and can't go throwing more hundreds of pounds - which I know isn't a lot of money - at it without it solving the problem. Other than that, I am thinking of just cutting my losses and selling.

So, the dizzy I am thinking of is this one............... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...m=110591719107

Anyone have experience of these?.......................or a general view on what to do?

What brand were your coil and condensor?

FWIW the distributors from SimonBBC (as above) did at one point (and possibly still do) come with a 2 year warranty.

EDIT: I stand corrected. He must be getting cockier by the day! Your distributor will come with a 3 year warranty!

Thanks Chas. The condensor's have all been Mallory and the coils, mainly, Lucas - the one on the car at present is from LD Parts and not sure if Lucas or not.

        Mallory condensors have history.......

For utterly bulletproof sparks, go to a MSD ignition box.
Header tanks - you can't beat a bit of bling.

So, no one here used one of these dizzys then?

I wouldn't touch it as it has a dodgy vacuum unit on it. Mike

                Looks great value for money.
Wish you could buy one for theTV8 engine at that price..

Does look like great value with that warranty but I notice that it is listed for the 3.9. Is that likely to be an issue

Apparently it depends on the age of the SD1 3.5 Paul, as the older ones have a different drive. I have to pull the old one out and see if i I need one with a male or female drive.

                      An update.

On the advice of Russ - can't get better than him - I didn't buy one of those dizzys I was talking about above. He suggested a particular one with electronic module that Rover used on the Sd1, which I found used on the bay for £35.00. Obviously all making massive sense so I bought it and it cmae with what seem to be a good set of leads.

I have had it fitted by Stag Classics nr Alton, and got it back yesterday. It is running really well again - certainly better than all of last year. So far it's also started better which has always been it's most annoying issue - but it's going to take a l -o-n-g time before I start to feel comfortable in using it with confidence that a) it will start and b) it will run right.

                      Anyway, all good at present

Glad to hear that you are up and running again with a good quality product without having to spend a lot.

                              Hi All,

Just out of interest what compression ratio is your RV8.
