    How vexing! Sorry to hear that of any of our suppliers! From your parts description, Dave, it may be that this is the same 'popular supplier' that I use. If so (and trying hard to see the 'up' side) I can only add that when it comes to critical details I get quite good results by e-mailing them questions about the parts on offer. As you know, sadly it's best before buying rather than after; and there's the catch. Who would have thought that your knob would not have come properly drilled and tapped?! Thanks for the posting.

      I think, but don't know for certain, that you can remove it by pulling the centre console towards the centre of the car and undoing the nut on the back of the choke cable outer. Then you have to pull the whole cable (outer and inner) into the car, having disconnected it at the carb end of course.

      Thanks, Julian. At times like this, I usually bless having a copy of the Workshop Manual. But it is of course not written for innocents like me for whom it can sometimes be:
      • neither clear (in this case about prising off the auto 'control lever gate panel')(yep: I followed the picture and bust the moulding again!)
      • nor wholly correct (e.g. about the number of heater screws to be removed in this case)
      • nor usefully comprehensive (e.g. failing to say that the knob assembly passes through a non-circular hole - with a flat on the top - in a fascia made of wood that is steel-backed).

      I had to:
      1- saw off the glued-on knob
      2 - remove the radio
      3 - move the centre console
      4 - pull the cable back out of the knob assembly
      5 - undo the backing nut you referred to, and
      6 - wrench the remains of the knob assembly out.

      Very indelicate!

      Now looking forward to the postman bringing me a nice new cable with an original-spec removable knob (albeit at quite a price).

        Roger, very sorry to hear that this was a balls ache for you. As Jakes mig reminded me the other night at least if you do a job properly when you are being referred to as the PO it won't always be with the word Bloody in front of it

        By the way how come your posts counter is stuck on 14?

          Cheers, Paul. It's good to winge, but mostly I hope that the posts help manage other owners' expectations. Who likes finding they have started a long task when they innocently thought it would be short?!

          (Post Counter software a cheap re-manufactured import?)
