    serious knocking from front end

great day out at Catton Hall show yesterday with the usual bits of problems ( overdrive stopped working, electric fan switch buggered and battery terminal connection making a bid for freedom ) all minor irritants and easily sorted. However the knocking from the front end on rough ground is getting a worry as even when I turn the radio up I can still hear it now there's no play in the road wheel and cant see anything obviously knackered so I'm thinking shocker top mount has gone, any other suggestions please. thanks peter

Anti-roll bar mountings? Amazing the noise they make, and such a simple fix. By the way, some-one will probably say this is wrong, but, rather than take the ends off the anti-roll bars to slide the mounting bushes on, I cut through one side of the bushes, so they would just push over the anti-roll bar. I reckoned that the way the clamp holds them, they are not going to fall apart where I cut them.

The poly bushes come already split, nice one David ! . If you're doing them, get new U bolts and nuts, the old one's will certainly give way. A short list to go through, Top mounts, as you say, but they don't tend to go quickly, bottom joints, movement can take two people to find, the anti roll bar drop links, wear in the outer ends of the rack as they pass through the rack body, very small movement, but loud noise. Let us know how you get on. Martin.

Ditto 4x4, I occasionally get knocks on rough roads even though bushes are new polly type.

I get knocks from the bottom steering column bush on rough ground, a job for next winter I think.

You know there have been cases of the bottom arm cracking ?

                  Cheers
