Hi all.
Lovely day today. I bathed the dog and changed the oil on the Stag and also fitted a spin on filter kit. I removed the old filter and found 2 x sealing rings jammed in the filter housing. Also the old filter seems to be a bit odd. Both ends are flat with no raised ring or card ring I wonder if the filter just rattled around in the housing. I fitted the spin on kit and filter filled up with VR1 and the engine now seems to run a lot smoother and quieter. We went for a 70 mile drive around the Norfolk Coast and had fish and chips in Cromer Very nice indeed.

A very similar filter design was used on many BL cars. We often used to see cars come in with two oil filter sealing rings

Thanks Julian. Do you think the old filter was doing anything with no raised ring? Also with the 2 x seals in place the filter housing wouldn't pull in to the housing as far as with one seal. Iam not sure how the oil flows through the filter. Is the unfiltered oil on the outside or the inside of the filter.

I rather suspect that, with two sealing rings AND no washer or raised ends, the filter wasn't doing much at all

I have to say, without looking, I don't recollect if the oil goes from inside out or outside in

The filter is held under spring tension so it should not be a problem.

Done a search and the oil goes from the outside in. Chris thanks for your reply. Just wondering what the raised ring or the card seal is for?? I have to say the engine does seem happier with the new oil and filter.

Thats why I use Mobil 1 in all my vehicles now, the fact a vehicle feels so much better after an oil change is an indication that the old oil had completely worn out and therefore wasn't doing a very good job at all.
I can leave Mobil 1 in forever and when I do do an oil change, I don't notice the blindest bit of difference.
Do use a Zinc additive as well though as modern oils are leaving it out due to legislation for catalytic convertors.

I have searched through the forum and VR1 seems to be the preferred choice as it dose have a fairly high zinc content.

Is that the fully synthetic version? http://www.valvoline.com/products/co...ing-motor-oil/Looking at the website, both VR1 racing oils seem to come in 10/30, do they do a thicker one?

No its the mineral 20/50 vr1 I have used.

Another fan of VR1 with the Spin On filter here . This combination seems to stay cleaner than previous choices I have tried and the oil pressure is more stable and a little higher at idle when hot.

20 -50 non synth VR1 again here. It's also the oil of choice for those running old Yank V8s. I think Millers also do a similar formulation.

Hi all.

Robbo, I think I would want to replace the new filter in about 300 miles if I had doubts about if the old one was doing anything. I suspect it wasn't and I would just want to see what the new one catches!!!

Of course it may be better not to know.

Just my 2 cents worth.
