A frustrating evening
That renowned fellow, DaveB, has just been round for the last 4hrs helping me (read doing most of the work) to swap out my water pump. Firstly the pump came out fine but it left the cage in situ, we managed to remove it with the aid of a large socket and a long bar. Unfortunately we have just given up on refitting the inlet manifold for the night, we have the N/S seated correctly and all bolts started, unfortunately we cannot get any of the O/S bolts started, the manifold is slightly too high. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I might get this blasted thing bolted in? the inlet manifold gaskets seem fairly thick, is this normal? if thin ones are available who from?

Hi Ian
I take it you have new gaskets, if so it sounds like you have the thick ones, i got normal ones fron the brothers, i just looked at their site and they dont sell different thinkness ones now but someone will give you the right place to go.

No problem, thin set ordered now so I'll use the delay to get the V painted, I've also got a pair of silicone cam cover gaskets that need fitting so I can get on with that too, the fun never stops eh.Originally posted by bunny View PostO balls sorry Ian i have two thick sets, i bought two sets of each and i forgot there was a leak on my first attempt so used the second, sorry mate

I didn't get on too well with those gaskets, they just wouldn't seal. I used sealant to stick them to the covers as instructed but the weeped from between the gasket and head!
I have gone back to cork gaskets

Mine are fine, (Silicon gaskets) in fact I would say they are far better for stopping leaks than the cork ones have ever been. the only thing I can fault them on is how easily they spread when tightened down.
I did have a very small weep on the L/H one when I first fitted them but I found that to be caused by the cover not being flat and level, once I sorted that I have had no issues since.

I spent another couple of hours on the inlet manifold this morning, I managed to get 7 bolts in at one point then decided the helicoil on the 8th must be knackered, took it off to find the helicoil is fine. Refitted manifold and put in the troublesome bolt first, then couldn't get the other bank to align. This is most frustrating, the gaskets don't seem any different to the ones that were on before to me. I have taken it off, cleaned the faces on the heads & inlet and painted the V, now to wait for the postman.
