    Fuel Tank Vent Pipes

    Hi,

I have just been replacing the fuel tank vent pipes on my Stag. Everything was going fine until I started to put the filler cap back on, I then noticed there wasn't a pipe to connect to the filler cap drain hole. The PO had connected the filler drain pipe to the short pipe which comes out of the top of the tank. Am I right in thinking I should blank off the pipe from the tank and connect the filler drain pipe to the drain hole on the filler cap?

    Thanks Chris

    Hi Chris,

The short metal pipe on top of the tank near the sender unit should be blanked off.

The drain hole at the filler neck goes out of the bottom of the boot via a legth of PVC tubing. The vent from the filler neck goes, via a fuel filter, through the hole in the vertical wall of the boot floor, just above the drain hole. Also via a length of PVC tubing.

    This may help:

      Hi Dave,

thanks for the speedy reply. The pictures were very helpful. I will sort it out tomorrow and reroute the pipe to go between the inner and outer wing at the same time.

      Cheers

Hi Chris, just out of interest, the Stag shared it's tank with the 2.5 PI estate, that stub is the injection return. The filter in the other line is a flame trap, it's a pain but don't leave it out. Enjoy Martin.

Have you got crop circles in your boot Dave - or are they mysterious orbs?

A strong smell of petrol is something my recently aquired Stag has suffered from since day one. I've cleared an whole heap of jobs on the 'to do' list, and today, having an hour or two spare, I've chosen this one.

This thread has been incredibly helpful already, it shows how a topic covered on a forum can be useful for others long into the future. I have dealt with one issue already, the short pipe close to the sender had just a short piece of rubber hose attached and was left as a loose end, obviouly contributing to the smell. I've blanked it off now, and although there is nothing wrong with using a suitable sized bolt to blank off a hose, can I just ask that anyone doing so to use a bolt with a long, unthreaded portion, mabe even after cutting of the threaded portion if it is too long, as petrol can find it's way along a thread? If this happens it is defeating the object.

I found other problems when going over my filler system, parts must be missing. The filler casting has two holes, one at the top whihc is threaded but with nothing attached. It seems that may have been used for a connection to the vapour filter?

Also, the other hole at the bottom looks as if it had a tube pressed into it at one time, providing the overflow connection, but on my filler there is no tube, just the hole.

I'd appreciate any advice on this and hope that I'm going to find out how to attach a picture.

                TIA

The bottom hole should connect to a pipe which exits under the car to allow any excess fuel up in the filler neck to run away.

The top hole is a tank vent and should have a connection and then a pipe that goes through a fuel filter and is then vented to air underneath the car.

These are the ones Dave referred to.

                  Cheers
