Whine

Hi all,
Just when I thought I would be quiet and just enjoy driving the Stag............
Engine-wise all seems to be good.

There is a whine from the rear of the engine bay, front of gearbox. It's worse when cold, seems to go when warm and very audible in park. Can't hear it in other gears (Stag exhaust too loud!). It's a BW35 box.

The box emptied a lot of oil over winter, and I've been filling the box up and trying to do the jump out and measure within 30 secs check. TBH, I really have no clue how much is in the box.

Changes are jolty. I've only got the car up to about 50-60 kph (no working speedo) on rural roads, so it has only changed into 2nd. I haven't done a long drive yet because of a couple of annoying minor but frustrating header tank cap and oil cap leaks.

Dip the gearbox when the whine is there - look for foaming of the fluid. It sounds like the fluid is cavitating. If the box dips foamy make sure it is topped up correctly, otherwise odds are the suction filter screen is a bit clogged and the pan will need to come down.

If none of this makes a difference, you could have a worn front pump and that is gearbox out....

On the back Russ's advice, if you have overfilled it, which is likely if topping up when cold, then this can cause the oil to froth as well.

Box out...I'm inclined to think that.
It won't be me doing it , there is a good place in town that's highly recommended by the local Brit car club, but $$$$

I haven't seen any froth and I've had the dipstick in and out many times

I wonder if I could do a Z4 conversion over here??????

Must be worth dropping the pan and cleaning the filter Tanya, as Russ suggests, the only cost is a gasket.

At least then you could be sure you've got the right amount of fluid in it.
