    Modern Pressure Caps questions

I've just relocated my alternator with the HRS bracket and now my header tank ( which is similar to VMads) pipe work will now foul the alternator as the outlet pipe is in the middle of the tank (VMads tank outlet is on the end of the tank so probably would have been Ok) I could have the tank modified but fancy going for a Cosworth type tank mounted on the turret to give a bit more height. The Cosworth tanks come with a modern pressure cap fitment and an outlet for a swirl pot. Two/three questions, do the modern screw on caps work like the old style pressure cap and are they available in 20psi rating?
What does the swirl pot outlet do and is this any different to a normal outlet?

    Dave.
I have a VW tank that I will get round to fitting one day it to has the "modern" style cap so I blocked off all the outputs of the tank and the pressurised it up to the point of the cap blowing off, low and behold it was 20psi but could not see any info on the cap or tank. some one on here may know the details.

    All the best
    Paul.

Caps are marked in kPa now, 140kPa is around 20psi. The caps are not accurate, I have a 120kPa which is fine as I prefer less stress on hoses.

        Hi Dave
Additonal height is no advantage. If you want to send me your tank, I will take it in part exchange for one of mine.
        Cheers

          Hi Chris
That's a really good offer, please PM me a price for one of your tanks with mine in PX. Mine has had the bracket modded and a hole put in the end for a switch so will need a bit of work to bring back to standard.
          Cheers

Isn't the downside of using a Cosworth part that you hence have to wear a baseball cap with the peak turned 90° to the side?
              The answer isn't 42, it's 1/137

i have a ford XR4i tank fitted around my turret, i think it is more or less the same as the cosworth expansion bottle, i found the ford caps are 20psi, mine is, all plumbed in and working now, no mods to the original pipework except one cut into the heater return pipe to insert a joint.

pipe from top of rad to tank
small pipe from bottle to tank
pipe from bottom of the expansion tank to joint in the heater return to pump outlet and rad
switch wired into a buzzer under the dash

she runs cooler, even at 90 on the motorway, lost the baseball cap though Drew, very pleased with the result. i used Danny's instructions on the Grampian Stag web site and all the info i have picked up on here.

i would really recomend this mod to everyone, i dont watch the water temp anymore, one worry off my mind and it can be reverted back to standard in a few minutes.

yea it's called a twinpipe, deep bass system Ian , you should see the faces on the others on the motorway, dont do it for long just enough to warm up at speed, had to try it out, i need to have her tuned now too, i think she may be too cool and the petrol is not evaporating properly in the carbs, i will see what the webber man says

Got to disagree with that Dave, If the tank is not much higher than the water pump, the water will circulate through the header as proven in tests at Ricado Engineering. Go for the Cossie tank, you need it as high as possible.

Similar principle as a vented heating system in a house ,tank goes in the loft to give a "head" of water the higher the better.More forced purging of any trapped air.

                        Cheers Steve

so you think he should get a loft conversion and fit the header tank there Steve, think he will need planning permission ? lol
