    filler neck/hose (158557) question

    Gents,

I have been experiencing what I would call a dull smell of petrol in the boot. Not enough to be a problem but is enough make anything that has been in the boot smell.

I have had a look around and cannot see any leaks. However after a lot of sniffing, it seems to be coming from the filler/hose, almost as if the hose is beginner to become permeable to petrol vapour. Has anybody else experienced this or have any other suggestions?

Please see attached picture of my filler neck hose.

I think it is a Mk 1 filler/hose extended with a piece of clear pipe to fit a Mk 2 tank, comments welcome.

If I brought a MK part number 158557 (£40) would it now fit properly

    Thanks in advance

    Mark

Make sure that the hose clips are clamping rubber onto metal. If the internal joining part is plastic, the clamping force and fuel will cause relaxation and leak paths for vapour.

What about using a good secondhand rubber filler pipe instead of a 'bodge':P

I seem to have the same problem,I have replaced every other part in the boot and still the smell lingers, it has to be the dodgy bodged hose which looks very similar to your set up, so i assume I have a mk2 tank in a mk 1 car ?

didn't know there wa sa difference.

I too am getting a fuel smell in our boot buthave not yet investigated fully.

However Irecall that on the top of (some ?)Stag fuel tanks there is a small length ofpipe which caps off an obsolete return feed (possibly used for US spec Stags or 2.5PI estates). This persishes and is often overlooked - apparently people replace this with a short length of new pipe insertedwith asmall bolt fixed by a jubilee clip to provide the necessary capping off.

Don't rule out that there might be a hole underneath, Stags do suffer from this due to condensation in the boot. When the tank runs a bit low, take it out and have a look. You can repair it with a product called 'Petropatch'
