Fitted my newly refurbed carbs today (thanks Alan) started first turn of the key before any adjustment. All running sweet although haven't had the chance to drive it yet as its now raining. However, noticed a small weep of fuel from the lower part of the gaskit on the nearside carb. Is it possible that this will seal itself once wetted a few times or will I need to take the carbs off again to tighten the screws? Cheers Steve

Hi Russ,Originally posted by kryten View PostProbably, yes. Give the gasket a chance to swell. Never yet had a problem with Alans carbs, fitting another set on Wednesday (converting back from Weber at owners request as his wife cant stand the oil smell from the lack of effective breather)

 Russ

I thought the weber carb was fit and forget, the only thing putting me off is the throaty sound due to the mesh air filter.

Jeff.I only do what the voices in my wife’s head tell me to do!

Well Sukh has gone back to Strombergs, so I'm very reliably informed. ..

Ironically John, this bloke bought the Weber quite recently to cure a fuel smell that his wife couldn't stand, so then he gets a an oil smell....that his wife couldn't stand....

He has spent over £600 to go full circle, taking in the 400 odd for the conversion and 200 to have his original carbs fixed.... hope his wife isnt watching what he is spending She may not stand for that either. ...

What Kryten says is news to me and is personally upsetting. No one has ever come back to me wanting to return the Weber.

I have never posted such criticisms of a fellow member, and would not do so. I think this is a breach of the spirit of the forum.

I have not previously seen the need to mention this but I also have first hand experience of the reverse happening, when I feel sorry for those who have come to me after regretting paying for a refurb. of the Stroms.

My personal opinion on why Triumph chose Strombergs over Weber was for commercial reasons to the detriment of excellence. For many owners the Strombergs are a challenge, but for others they can just be a constant pain.

As far as breathing, it’s no different to the also popular Holley (or even those fitting fuel injection) in that you can fit the breather into the air cleaner, or simply run the breather pipe down below where the fumes can be expelled, no oil smell necessary. If the engine is worn and is a heavy breather or leaks oil badly, there is an option to fit a PCV breather, but I think that just masks an engine problem.

I designed this conversion because there was a need to offer an alternative to the misery that some people were experiencing with their Strombergs. I wanted other people to have another choice of alternative carburettor, and I still have full commitment to that choice.
