Dave, all I did was use a 22mm solder ring connector like this images.jpg
I preheated it to remove all the solder in the rings and then used a hole cutter on the rad and soldered it in place.

I used a brass elbow--1/2"bsp male(screws directly into top of rad)with a 15mm compression tail,,from wickes,screwfix etc'.
This works well as you fill it up from the new expansion tank(I used a tank from a rover 75 by the way,,cost a fiver from a scrap yard.)

In my 33 years experience,,I found the (green) unleaded solder needs a little more temperature, than the old leaded solder,before it melts.
Use the unleaded though as it may be a bit tougher, for your job.
