I seem to recall someone saying that the Princess callipers, whilst being 4 pot had an overall piston surface area smaller than the Stag ones, making them less efficient.

I Could be wrong though.

This is true. For many years (and still today, but to a much smaller extent) Princess 4 pots were the 'upgrade' of choice for a Capri or Mk1 Escort until the recent advent of using Mk1 Mondeo calipers (which have been proven to be more effective). It has been said that Princess 4 pots gain you more pad area which can help though. They are rather heavy though for what they are.

I have not found an issue with the stock brakes though in good order. Mine stops very well and is quite responsive.

Wards sell an upgrade kit as Martin has said, although so do Monarch and possible Chris Witor, neither are cheap options (but probably not too badly priced by the time you start adding things up in trial and error time in making a set).

I've got a pair of Richard Lane's XJ6 mods, fitted them and never used, rusting away in my garden at the moment and yes, they are VERY heavy.

What's the old saying, "Don't fix what isn't broken" like has been said all they need is to be kept in good nick for our kind of use. Mine were more than capable of locking up the front wheels at 55mph on the A3 when a twat missed his turn off when overtaking me then just cut across in his Audi
