    BW65 Gearbox

    Hi All

New owner of Kermit Green '78 Auto.

BW65 Box seems to hold in gear for a long time and then snatches into 2nd. 2nd to 3rd is slightly better.
Checked fluid hot and seems OK. ticks over at about 700-750. Have looked at past posts but still no real joy.
    Gearbox overhaul?

    Any ideas

    Thanks

    Austin

Sticky governor. Can be done with gearbox in, at home.

      Thanks Russ

Do you know of a thread that might point me in the right direction to complete the job?

        Sticky Governor

        Hi

Russ very kindly replied saying it may be a sticky governor. Thanks

Anybody know how this is undertaken or a link to any info

        Thanks

The governor is on the gearbox tailshaft. It has spring loaded bob weights that are flung out according to road speed and open oil channels to tell the valve block how fast it is going which will compare speed with load and operate the 1-2 & 2-3 shift valves appropriately.

The procedure is covered in the manual, but will involve exhaust off, propshaft off, then remove gearbox flange and remove the tailcase. The governor is mounted on the output shaft.

There is a possibility that the valveblock is sticky as well, but yours sounds like governor...

            Had this problem with mine.
It would hold onto first and not change up, until the gearbox had warmed up.
In my case yes, the governor was the fault.
Its many years ago but I removed the rear propshaft and the governer lives in the very end of the gearbox the last bolted section.
Removed in situ then cleaned up the governor, been fine since.

EDIT: Russ is quicker than me, and more detailed!
            Mike.

Might be worth adjusting the kickdown cable first to see if that makes a difference. Much easier than the governor!

Before you start ripping the box to bits, slacken off the kickdown cable a bit to see if it helps...

By the way, congrats on the kermit green- I'm assuming you mean Java, in which case you join me in an exclusive branch of the club.... although my BW65 has been replaced by a ZF 4 speed auto. .

PS welcome to the loony bin - there are literally thousands of collective years of Stag ownership on here, so join in the fun...

Wilf - are your psychic powers limited to knowing I was writing that as the same time as you, but not to your fuel level?

Apparently so, it would appear I cannot connect with petrol. Lol

Also check the colour of your fluid. It may have been contaminated. Worth changing it if you haven't done so. Mike

I would change the fluid for the recommended grade; when I bought my Stag in Feb, a certain firm supplied me with ATF of the wrong spec. The BW35 and 65 should have TQF spec fluid, not the modern stuff......

ATF only stands for Automatic Transmition Fluid just needs to meet this spec

Thanks guys for all your suggestions. I will start with replacing fluid first as it is a bit dirty. Then will try the kickdown adjustment and then the governor. Really enjoying tinkering with 'Kermie'. Yes Russ it is a lovely Java Green old lad!

It is a 1978 and is one of the last 250 registered. So far, new poly bushes, new carpets, and a few general ancillaries but otherwise a great original Stag. Mixed reactions, as expected, on the colour but hey ho I like it. Very striking and I really think it suits the car especially with the hard top fitted.

Thanks all and no doubt will be speaking again soon as problems arise!

                          Cheers

Welcome to the Forum. Surprised that you haven't bought a Healey! I suppose you've heard that before!

Or an all aggro complete with square wheel.

Good luck with the gearbox, my old BW65 is alive and well and driving round Tenerife in Graham's (Staggard) car when his 35 turned up its toes.

You'll find the female of the species love Java - not a bad thing when you need the missus onside to buy trinkets for the car...
