petrol smell & gearbox fluid leak

First i get the smell of petrol in the car when the roof is up also in the boot i've checked the boot area and under the bonnet and cannot find any leaks .
Second keep finding gear box fluid on garage floor ,i have been told that this is a common thing and that no one has come up with a perminant solution ,except extendind the breather pipe over the gear box , is this correct.

no I never have any fluid leak from the gearbox, but I did have a vent pipe off the tank in the boot which caused a petrol smell in the car

Have you got a manual or auto ? You talk of 'gearbox fluid' rather than gearbox oil which might suggest auto ?

I've got manual but believe fluid leak on auto is quite common. Hopefully we'll get an auto owner on here with advice (if your's is auto)

As for the fuel smell, petrol tanks can rust through on the underside, and they start with pinholes that seep, rather than leak. Only four bolts, and the pipework, to remove to check (but make sure fuel is low first as it can be heavy )

          Cheers

My auto used to leak but fitting a new front seal has stopped it for now. As I had the engine out it seemed daft not to change the seal. How long it will stay leak free for I have no idea

But there's lots of things that shouldn't happen on a Stag but do

As I mentioned, I've got a manual so if I'm wrong I apologise. However I'm sure I remember reading quite a few posts (maybe on the 'other' Stag phorum) about autos losing fluid

                Cheers

I think the issue in question Dave is the NRV in the valve block that should stop the TC draining back but sometimes doesn't do what it's supposed to do. Mine has suffered from incontinence about 3 or 4 times since I have had it.

From what Russ has said I think it can be repaired with out taking the box out?

Fortunately the PO had this job done before he sold it to me. My car spent over 3 months in one place on a scissor lift and the only oil on the ground beneath it was from one of the hydraulic rams on the lift. Must be lucky I guess.....

Either that or it's completely dry.......

My BW35 has dumped oil twice now if it is not run for a while. I estimated after about 3 weeks, so now, weekly I start up and move selector through the range and this seems to work, but I do have drip trays along the length of the car to be on the safe side of messy! Rad and dif included.
