    Steering play

Buttercup was a bit of a "wanderer" so far as steering was concerned - enough play to require a "counter steer" when straightening up after a bend. I found that increasing the toe-in a touch kept her running true on the straights. The MOT man said he could feel play in the drivers side track rod ball joint (not the track rod end, but the ball joint that screws onto the end of the rack). Couldn't feel it myself, but since he knew a man who would refurb that joint for the princely sum of £15, including a new nylon cup etc., I thought it was worth a go. So for that cost plus a new track rod gaiter and track rod end balljoint rubber seal, I did the job. And it was well worth it, the MOT man was right, that little repair has improved the steering no end. Easy to do and makes a difference - my kind of garage therapy.

Ask for Ray, and by all means mention my name. His garage is a classics specialist.
