Earthing Strap - It's had me going for ages!

For months and months I've had an intermittent earthing problem which only affects the starter motor.
I've replaced no end of parts in the early days thinking it was the battery, starter motor etc.. all of which sorted the problem temporarily but not for long.
Several members said it was an earthing problem so I had the main earth strap off and cleaned it and all its mounting points and hey, it worked no problem at all for a while then it came back again.
I gave up until now when having just finished the engine re-build (following the blown head gasket), all now back in car and today I thought (confidently) I should hitch up the power firstly to turn it over with no ignition connected to get plenty of oil circulating connected battery but nothing, just a click!
Undid and re-did the earth strap again and we had power, turned over with a build up to just short of 80 psi so seems ok (!).
Still not got the exhausts on or but I just had to have a go with ignition to see if it would start - you know the slight sense of trepidation and the "am I sure I have done it all properly" knowing full well I have!
Turned the key and click - bugger!'So I get the earth jump lead and connect that to the battery and t'other end to the block, turn the key and first spark it fires up - flippin brilliant and very loud!
So I get back in and order a new earth strap from Paddock's having decided there must be something wrong with this plain piece of braided metal although what could go wrong..?
An hour later I took the damn thing off and as I undid it I just realised that the engine end of the strap was a tiny bit loose, obviously the solder had worn away and clearly contact was very occasional.
If you ever get a starting problem, don't be a pr*t like me and replace all the big bits first - get an earth strap for £10 and save a load of time, money, anger............

    Cheers,
    Mike

      Cheers,
I noticed that some of the new earth leads are a bit naff,in that they have the cable passing loosely through the connection eyelet that attaches to the body frame
I soldered mine together as it would give the problems you just had

I added a second earth strap to help the click nothing...I did help only occasionally do I get a click nothing now, before could get a dozen on occasion before engagement.

          Cheers Alan's

I'll definitely check that when the new one arrives - could have stuck with he old one really its is fixable but what's a tenner after the other £400 or so wasted.....

Another annoying thing was that I ordered a new accelerator cable from Paddocks - went to fit it today only to find it's a LHD one -too short!
On heir website they managed to get the part numbers and pictures transposed so when you order a RHD one you get LHD without realising. I've alerted them now but a bit p'd off really..
That is the only moan I have ever had about Pad's though, they are first rate for service/parts and cheap on shipping too unlike some of the big guys.

I must admit I was thinking about using the old one as an additional body to engine strap..

            Cheers

You need the starter relay, about a tenner. Martin.

After seeing the clicking on my old Dolly Sprint and on a friend's 1850, the starter relay conversion is invaluable IMO. The Stag starts first time everytime (it came with one ).

Yup, done the starter relay mod on mine too. Good preventive modification.
Header tanks - you can't beat a bit of bling.

Try unplugging the big connecter near the starter motor and give it a good clean. Might solve the "stag click" problem.

I've got the high torq starter (from Robsport) so I dont think this is an issue now, it draws less current (but still needs a good earth)

                      Cheers guys!

If my starter ever dies, it is the starter I have in mind .
