    Stag Auto, wont reverse....

Hello! have had a lovely few days in the stag! not done many miles just local stuff

Had an issue today, stopped in a lane tried to reverse back up due to anther car and it wouldn't reverse... once i explained the the other driver and apologised i checked the box oil.... there is oil in there, im not sure where the level should be, i have had the car dump all the autobox oil out before, im not sure if it was a serious issue or just due to a lack of use?

    Whats the next step?

Might be worth adjusting the selector rod. Try lengthening it a touch, maybe 1/4". If you go too far, it won't select park.

      shamelessly derived from here: http://www.stag.org.uk/forum/showthr...highlight=Park

More info, obviously you need to check the oil level, I presume it's a 35 Warm up the box select all the gears finish up in park turn off the engine and check the level within 30 seconds. Has this just happened ?? if so its not likly to be the selector rod adjustment, or is it an ongoing problem, Does everything else select ok Eg L1 L2 D Park.?? Graham

Ok reverse is rear clutch rear band, Rear band is also used in lock up 1 so if you have also lost engine braking in L1 we have a rear band or rear servo problem Graham

im not really sure if its been getting worse as we have not really used the car, it seems ok when the box is cold, worse when hot....

i can lock it in 2nd, while moving but i cant then knock it in to first... i can stop lock in 1st and drive like that,,, it did seem to slip a little,,,, but only once i have not been able to get it to do it again?

would the kick down have anything todo with it? thats the only thing that been touched when the carbs were stripped ....

oil level seems about half way.. i measured my dip stick its 14. 5 inch so seems the right length, Im thinking maybe a good oil change might help if its got a block valve or something?

whats the correct oil to use? ATF? AQF? Ben

If you check out the posting on page 5 Borg Warner 65 this will tell which fluid to use. What I ment Ben if you select 1 then drive the car when you take your foot off the gas do you get engine braking or doe's it just roll on.

Sounds like a 35 to me. Dropping the pan, cleaning the filter screen and adjusting reverse brake band may be of some use...

When you select R, are there any noises to suggest that it is trying to do something or just nothing at all?

yes, it jumps in to gear, goes back,,, only on the flat... any incline and it wont go back..... if its on the flat and i crawl back and use a bit gas it doesnt have much effect on the speed.and yes its a BW35

Clutch or band then - mechanical rather than hydraulic - lets hope it's band adjustment. ..

                      It's covered in the manual...

I have had the odd not drive with the 35Auto.I find that if I put in another half litre of atf it then performs 100%.I have tried the correct way of checking the oil level as prescribed in the manual but then it tends to overfill the unit and then it leaks out,so if and when it starts misbehaving I put in another Half litre. Funny you should say that... When I got the stag it had Way too much oil in yet it worked ok....
I'll try draining out filling and keep filling to see if it fixes it.... Gotta be worth ago,
Gearboxes seem pretty rare! If the box is dead what's the best solution? Zf4? Or a manual box?

I reckon I would see what happens when you drain the auto and refill.Hopefully it will behave properly.Myself much as I would have liked a stag with gearbox and overdrive mine came from England in 1975 with a 35 borg warner auto so that's how it stays. Also have the stromberg carbs. The car has done 250000kms 155000miles) and still going strong. My stag is a white one too. Good luck Ben

Good secondhand boxes are available, but fairly thin on the ground and you have the worry of fitting it to find that it is not as good as the vendor said!

MOD is an option, but again comes with its own issues with quality of parts you buy, and some have regular clutch issues if you read the forum.

From personal experience of the past five years, the ZF is a great alternative providing relaxed cruising with much lower engine rpm at 70mph. There is the bonus of much improved mpg and obvious benefits in terms of engine wear. Downside is cost, of course, but a rebuild of your BW by a decent trans specialist isn't cheap, and a good portion of the cost of the ZF.

If you intend to keep your Stag for some time it's definitely worth thinking about the 4 speeder.
