    Advice on my shaft please

Managed to get my water pump out for a refurb in case it was the cause of an annoying slight leak into the V. Big thanks to Stagdad steve for making a slide hammer to get it out

The following photos show chipped gear teeth, and I would like to know if it is ok to re-use? The jackshaft is in great condition.

Well it had its full complement of teeth 4 years ago.

Assuming you didn't fit it with a hammer, why have the teeth flaked off like that?

And how long before the rest fall off (again assuming you didn't fit it with a hammer).

If it had been fitted with missing teeth and had done 4 years without any further apparent wear I would possibly have said risk it, as it is I personally would be asking Steve for one of his kits.....

The engine was rebuilt by a local guy, who came recommended, and since I have known him has become a good friend. He is a retired concorde engineer, and now does mechanics etc for local people. I can't imagine him using a hammer to install the pump. Is there any other reason the teeth could have chipped during use over the last 4 years?

This is an original pump, not one of the super soft ones that were around a while ago!

Think you might be right about a stagdad pump....

Was this before it was fitted?
It is strange that just the corners of teeth have gone, as if maybe some force was used to fit it. It is a pretty unstressed part normally assuming its getting oil to lubricate.
I definitely wouldn't re-use it though, try and get a hardened shaft one or go for a "SD"

                    Cheers

@ Mike - The photo was taken when I stripped the engine down 4 years ago, but did'nt trust myself to rebuild it, so a local guy did it. He's not the sort of guy to force something, but who knows.

@ everyone else - thanks for the replies and advice guys, I'll see if I can get a replacement shaft, or I'll be calling Steve....

                      Cheers...Al

Thanks Dave. Seems a bit steep though, Paddocks do recon ones for £65. Made an offer though, so will see...

                            Al,
thinking about it I have a spare shaft which is undamaged - I started to re-build the pump then gave up an bought a new one.

If you want it it's yours plus I have gaskets and one of the LD parts ceramic seals if you want - just needs a new cage or an undamaged one

                            Let me know

                            Cheers
                            Mike

I'm with the rest. Don't use it. Odd sort of failure too - looks like a very brittle sort of failure like someone tried to bang it in without rotating the shaft or the jackshaft.
