Inner wheel arch - original finish ?

    image.jpg
    Hi all

The wheel arches on my stag are covered in some form of protection solution. It was not applied by myself and I'm not sure what it is. What I do know is that I don't particularly like the look of it as it just always looks dirty. I have attached a photo to give you some idea.

i appreciate that protection in the area is particularly important so am interested in knowing the following

    1) what was the original protection applied from the factory, if any ?
    2) what have you used that no only works but looks good

I know some may think this question is a little over the top but its just one of those things I have been considering for a while

    thanks

Hi Darren, spray over it, after cleaning, with Black Waxoyl, looks very smart. That finish looks too good to be ex-factory. Martin.

      1. Original underside finish was red oxide with varying thicknesses / coverage of primer & or topcoat, usually very thin!

Underseal was a dealer / aftermarket extra.

      2. 3M body shultz (sp?) which comes in black..... Looks like it was done in the '70's

My arches are not disimilar to that and I assumed it was a good quality underseal used. Perhaps that's why my bodywork is very good after scraping off the under seal.

I used to use Shutz a lot then spray colour on top (Celly of course)

This is what I found when I removed the underseal from mine:

Good old red primer. The underseal came off with a ordinary heat gun and paint scraper. I found no trace of body colour.

Any slight rust was treated, then a good coating of Red Oxide:

Seam sealed, followed by stone chip protection:

          Then 2-pack body colour:

Ought to last a year or two now....................
