    Fitting door speakers

The new head unit is snuglyfitted and looks like a good toy that sounds good as well. Therefore its time to fit the new door speakers to support the Vibe ones in the cubby holes.

Normally, I start on something, find out I dont have the tools and/or parts and end up taking a few days for a simple job. So, do I need any special tools? Do I need to take a jigsaw to the door frame, will the window openers never work again if I am not carefull. Basically what do I need to know before I go out and start to disasemble my doors

    Thanks in advance

I saw some pics on here once of a front speaker installation that was under the front seats. The Owener had knocked up a couple of MDF boxes and fixed them to the underside of the seat frame height adjustment mechanism. This would avoid you having to chop up your door cards altogether.

That was me, I was unwilling to cut holes in the trim so I placed two 4 inch speakers at each end of the dash and 2 more, 1 under each seat in MDF boxes. It sounds really good. My son was in the back seat for a recent 400 km trip and he said he could hear perfectly.

I like the fact that apart from the detachable head unit every thing is hidden from view.

      regards,

      Raoul

        Graham,

There is an alternative. Found these 85mm JVC speakers in my local A1 Motor Store. Only had to drill two extra holes for the mounting holes furthest from windscreen. I still have to make a baffle plate to go betwen them, but they sound good and balance the system nicely. I have 5 x 8 JVCs in the cubbies.

          Hi Dave,

the main reason I am getting the front speakers is for when I add some form of screen in the winter between the front and back.

Other than that I am 100% happy with the cubby speakers as the they sound great. With the screen in place,I expect to fade fully to front in the winter and my concern would be that the smaller ones in that hole may not sound as good as door mounted.

Raoul - where did you put the dash speakers? I've toyed with the idea of putting small speakers under the dash but they won't take a lot of power. Also wondered about fitting in footwell but the speaker depth is a problem. In my old Spitfire I cut a hole in the footwell area - often wondered what that did to the structure.

What beats me is that the door frame has the speaker hole cutout already in it so who was the bright spark that covered it with the door pocket?

              Hi Paul,

I made up a couple of mounts from 5 plyand put the 4" speakers under the dash, one at each end. The L/H one is located in the corner directly above the bonnet release cable. If you remove the glove box you will see there is heaps of space in there. The R/H one is a little more complicated as the mount had to be relieved a little to allow for the brake pedal.

I'll post a photo over the weekend to show more clearly.

              regards,

              Raoul

Well in mine theres a speaker sized recess in the doorframe down at the front with a cutout in the middle - big enough to take a small magnet speaker, which were in mine when I bought it moons ago.

I was hoping that it would be around the area of the pocket - does anyone have a picture of a door minus door trim?

The speaker cutout is behind the pocket. I had to cut the hole a bit bigger for my speakers.

The pic is of an old door.

My car has door speakers fitted , Somebody cut bigger holes to take them in the matal door frame , the door pockets were also cut and the speaker face put on them , I put leather trim into the car and didnt want to cut the new leather so i cut the board away from the inside and left the leather intact , speaker works fine and you wouldnt know by looking at it that its there , I also put a small speaker in the dash top under the grill. There is also speakers in the rear cubby holes.

                              Hi Graham.

It depends on what size speakers you are installing. I've got 7" pioneer in the doors so i had to cut the door a bit. In the cubby's are 6" x 9" pioneer with a pioneer faceoff unit, sounds great
