    Stag's, Handbrakes & MOT's

Took the Stag for MOT today

There has been a few post on here about about Stag handbrakes not being up to the job which I have never agreed with really, so for the record

My brakes achieved 6 lockups on the rollers, figures before the wheels locking showed footbrake at 83% efficiency with near perfect balance and the handbrake achieved 39% before locking both wheels.

System is all as Mr Triumph made it with the exception of braided hoses and just maintained as needed. I humbly suggest that any car with a poor handbrake still has a fault present somewhere

Anyway that's done for another 13 months, just need to pay the road tax for the last time

Only thing i don't like about the brakes on my car is the amount of pedal travel, but when the time comes another M/cylinder and a look at the Servo might improve that.

Nice one Ian, peace of mind. As you say, keep them up to spec and they're as good as any, no mechanical system will last forever. I've just fitted new drums, and the pedal came up quite a way, just waiting for them to bed together, they're like modern's as it is. Martin.

That reminds me, I must check and see when my MOT is due. Next month I think!

Yeah, but Ian, your brakes weren't quite good enough to stop you before knocking that girl onto your bonnet.

            Oh, that's in your Allegro

            Cheers

I never thought my Avatar would attract so many comments, far more than the Chavy Metro did

I think this one is here to stay for a while

I think if I had a bird on my bonnet I wouldn't be in a rush to get rid of her

Btw. At risk of being ridiculed, I quite liked Allegros. Certainly easier to work on than Stags

                Cheers

Ps I commented on your Metro !

So did I, generally easy to work on and fun to drive, I thought the estate version was quite a useful little car.

Better put our Tin Hat's on now

                  This should draw some comments

                    Please don't tell me that's a mid-engined Allegro!

A classic case of a cut being made in the wrong place.

Should have been crosswise, ie. in two halves

Back to handbrake. My hand brake used to work after a few clicks. However, after I replaced the shoes and cylinders (one piston was seized each side resulting in uneven shoe wear), I set up the hand brake by the book. This caused the brakes to rub a bit too much, causing the hub to get too hot, so I had to slacken off a lot and now the lever is almost all the way up before it works. I have decided to leave it like that for a while whilst the brakes bed in. The new shoes did not look too good quality-wise.

                          Anyone had the same issue?
