    Cylinder heads

Help, Does anybody know where i can you a pair of heads ,( with out breaking the bank), Mine are u/s, Took one old girl to have new head gasgets fitted, as one had been weeping for ages, but when the guys took of the heads, they had pot hole size pits & had already been skinned to the limit & beyond . The engine was rebuilt by a local specialist (so called ) only 3 years ago. how they reused those head i don't no.
It would be a shame to scrap her as she past the last MOT with flying colours, and the body is very good conditon. Any help or ideas guy.
    Cheers Nigel.

Dont scrap her. If you keep looking on ebay your are bound to find heads or even a full engine to take the heads from.

I can't believe the heads have already been skimmed "beyond" maximum as you would have had serious problems either with the CR being too high or the pistons and valves meeting at high rpm. Pits in the heads are only a problem if they are large enough to compromise critical areas of the sealing faces, mostly they arent and if the waterways are too badly corroded or you have large pits, a decent machine shop would be able to weld them up.

Really the only way a head is scrap is if another skim would start to cut into the valve seats on the inlet valves. there are extra thick gaskets and even headsaver shims that can salvage slightly overskimmed heads.

If you could get some pictures then there is a wealth of knowledge and experience on here to be able to tell you if those heads really are scrap or not.

      Hope that helps

      Kind regards
      Ian

PS put a rover v8 or triumph 6 pot in or even sell her with a failed engine, but don't scrap the car, there is too much of that going on!

You can go to rimmerbros and pick two second hand ones you never know you may find two that need some work at a cheap cost

I had my engine on eBay. Well documented on here and it's still available, you would need to get the seized studs out but the engine it's self is very sound. It had a weeping head gasket that never overheated so I believe the head would be fully serviceable. Send me a pm if you would like to discuss

                Nigel.
Head saver shims if necessary and dont forget they can be welded up if its just pits, if it has been running OK then it cant be that bad. Post some pics so we can all have a look and put our collective amnesia behind it.

Why Are the saver shims and head gaskets pattern taken from the block rather than the head? i suspect that if these gaskets had smaller water ways the same as the head there would be less pitting and less heads being ruined.
                    Cheers Glenn

Iff they were shaped to fit the head and not the block, there would be an unclamped portion where the squish area is. The un-clamped portion wouldn't transfer the heat of combustion away properly so it would get extremely hot causing pre-ignition and would probably get destroyed itself in the process.

Actually I didn't read your post properly, I think you are referring more to the waterways. Maybe the head gaskets are made as they are so they are not handed and can be fitted to either head, I havent got any here to look at. Either way the corrosion of the water ways in the head would still happen, enlarging them over time. The pits where the head effectively blanks off the waterway in the block isn't usually too big a problem, Mine has pits but the heads seal fine. The pits are very easy to fix too, just weld them and skim the head.

                          Nigel,

As Keeny says - go to Gosnays, they are absolutely brilliant and I am sure will be able to fix yours - they are also the inventors of the Savershims (unlike someone else on ebay up north who implies they are) They re-built mine for a lot less than others will quote and they don't like to give up on problems.
I've no connection with them either but just very pleased with their work - if you want a good rec' too ask Burton Power, Gos' do a lot of their work.

                          Cheers
                          Mike
