    Diff serial number

Hi all, I have just cleaned the paint off of my diff to unearth the serial number. The number starts with MG and is MG13082. I thought it should have started with LD. Has anyone got a similar number to this on their diff or has mine come from another model car?!!!!!!

    Thanks Paul

    Paul,

This is from a Saloon and, unless the innards have been swapped, will be 3.45:1 ratio. The Stag, or LD, diff is 3.7:1, so yours, like mine, is a higher ratio.

Hi Dave, thanks for that bit of info,I have had mine 31 years, and have learnt more about it in the last few days than the whole time I have had it. 2 days ago I found out that my engine was an exchange unit because the engine numbers last 3 digits were ESS....... Today I have a diff from a saloon, or minimum the casing from a saloon. Did all the saloons have the 3.45 diff?
The gearbox, should the serial number start eith LD as well?!!

      Thanks Paul

I think the estate had the MG prefix diff with a 3.7 ratio. That's what mine has got too! There is a website somewhere that lists all the triumph diff prefixes, but I can't remember what it is off hand.

Hi Dave, the web site is club Triumph or triumph2000register.co.uk.. plus there are 1 or 2 others. The 2500TC and 2500S have the serial number MG, from what I can make out the manual cars were 3.45:1 and Autos were 3.7:1. So it could be either I think.
Thanks guys for your knowledge tonight. Paul

Paul, if the diff is off the car (or the car is jacked up) could you turn the propshaft and count (against a marker) the number of revolutions the half shafts make. Granted 3.45 v 3.7 is not a massive difference but you may be able to tell?
