    Chassis/Body Number

    Hello All,
I went to my local vehicle licensing office last week to enquire about how to change the taxation class to historic next year. All was well until the clerk noticed that the number recorded at item ‘E’ (VIN/Chassis/Frame No.) on the V5 was not the same as on my heritage certificate under Car/Chassis Number. I was suddenly perplexed and not thinking too clearly at that point. Later I could see that the number at item ‘E’ was the body number as shown on the certificate.
Perhaps some of you could have a look at your V5’s for me and let me know which number is recorded, Chassis No. LD/***** or Body No. T.*****-LD. Also which you consider is the correct number to be on the V5.
    Thanks, John.

Thanks very much for your reply, I know it was a rather dismal enquiry but I was hoping for a bit more interest. I can't believe mine is the only one where this error has occured.

We could only repeat what Sam has correctly said.

I've never heard of the body number being used by mistake before.

        Cheers

The correct number is on the commission plate on the passenger door pillar. It will be LD............. something. The two tags on the bonnet slam panel are irrelevant to the DVLA. If your comms plate is missing this could be a difficult problem for you to solve.

Your V5 will have the commission plate number on it and this will be different from both the other numbers..... hence their irrelevence

Just to make you feel better.... when my MOT was completed the guy input the body number rather than the chassis number. Had to get it re-mot'd by them!! No probkem just time!

Thank you all for your replies.

I have been delving into the car’s history and discovered that the number was changed following a MOT in 2005. The last handwritten MOT for 2004/5 shows the correct chassis number but the certificate issued in 2005, the first printed one, shows the body number. This caused the DVLA to change its records and all subsequent documentation has been issued with the body number on it. The DVLA have a note of this change but no microfiche records. The commission plate is in position and shows the chassis number as documented on the earlier MOTs and the heritage certificate. I wonder how tricky it will be to get it changed back.

              Thanks again to everyone.

Logic says that if you write to DVLA explaining the situation, take photos and send them with the letter; they may want you to take the car to a testing station to confirm your story, but you should get the number corrected on your V5. I know it might seem a hassle but for the sake of the value of your car it is worth doing it.

Good advice I would have thought. Include photocopies of the MOT's either side of the error and I would expect sense to prevail.

Thanks everyone. I’m going back to the local office soon armed with all the documents; I’ll let you know what happens. Unfortunately, the office, like all the rest around the country, is to close shortly with most of the staff losing their jobs.
