    oil leak

i,m stripping my engine and far pleased to find what the seller told me , nice new clutch and also starter ring gear too with zero wear. The flywheel bolt had thread locktite on. So far looks like a really good build.
But wait a minute , i removed the gearbox to find a little puddle of oil ,could the rear seal or sump be leaking , the car did have a slight oil leak , orrr is this from where the engine was removed . Any ideas

Ed, A tiny amount of oil. I had a leak from the front gearbox oil seal that was getting onto the clutch and causing severe judder. To test for leakage, the garage attached a drill to the input shaft and rotated until they saw the leak. On removing the plate that secures the oil seal, you could see the seal was damaged. All now fixed, but here is a picture. This caused a considerable leak compared to yours, but you could check the gearbox front seal to be safe. I am not sure about checking the rear crankshaft oil seal.

Not sure if this helps? Thanks and good luck, Mark

Proberly rear crank seal easy enough to do when you remove the carrier dont break the sump gasket, put sealer on the sump gasket and I always put a smear on the outside of the new oilseal where it fit's into the carrier. IMO the oil is on the wrong side of the flywheel to be from the box.

Cheers Mark. That's a big help if anything it's high lighted another seal I need to look out for. I'm pretty sure it's engine oil as gear oil stinks. The next step is finding out if there is a choice of sump gasket and which is most popular.

Yes I did norice the box has a drain hence I supose it couldn't make it past. I'm now pleased I started being nosey. I'm going to remove the sump anyway as some clever person in the past decide its was a good jacking point
            Cheers Edd

Edd if you are going to start knocking the sump about make sure you do a leak test before putting it back and then putting the engine back in filling it with oil then to find a hairline crack. You going to ask how I know this

                    Edd,

when you strip it down check to see if the crank has a speedy sleeve on it. if it has try and get some sealant behind it on it's outer edge (opposite the main bearing) I did a bottom end rebuild with a new crank for a fried and ended up changing the seal 3 times (different seals from different suppliers) to get it to stop leaking. also don't forget that the bolts in the crank need a sealant on them as well as they are not blind threaded holes.

I got feed up keep taking the BW35 in and out
