Screw on oil-filter - Is it frowned upon ?

Question for the forum tech experts....

Is it frowned upon to swap out the original element style oil-filter and move to a screw-on ?

If one moves over to screw-on, what size filters are needed ? I see that Rimmers do one (Part RR1243) but you get no indication of size/capacity.

    Thanks

    Malcolm

if it is frowned upon there are plenty of furrowed brows..... lots of feedback regarding filters on this thread:

NO why should it be frowned upon, why do you need to know capacity and size??

Not frowned on Malcolm, done carefully it's a very good idea. Just a tip. do NOT use filters with a non-return valve, it obstructs take up on a cold start. Martin.

I have been using the spin on oil filter for years. I don't find it an issue just a personal choice. Normal oil pressure is maintained.

Hi Malcolm, I am currently using large capacity filter that a purchased from Wards. Not sure if there is that much difference to be noticed but they were not any more expensive than standard ones from elsewhere. Got them at National day a couple of years ago so saved on postage. Not sure if they will be at this years national day. I am hoping the larger size will be easier to undo as there's more to get hold of. Steve

I repalced my element oil filter with a spin off type, the only thing which was pointed out to me by Faversham Classics is the flow rate of oil through the spin off filter is of an unknown for the engine.saying that I have had no problems with the spin off filter which has been fitted for the last ten years
              Hope this helps

I have a spin on filter on my Stag and don't understand why you would think that they might be frowned upon.

The filter is GFE 180 which is easy to buy from the usual suppliers.

Most of the reason for fitting the screw on conversion in the first place was the number of poor quality original type filters that had a habit of shedding their cardboard end seals. These then blocked the oil ways and wrecked the engine.

I have been using screw on filters for 20 years with no problems.

You should treat yourself and buy a new one maybe Phil?

I too have spin on and, when my engine is running, it seems to work fine. Filters are plentiful

Worthwhile mod IMHO as the original system was far too easy to re-assemble wrongly or with missing bits,, and end up with total bypass, i.e. no filtration.

                        Mine works fine.

As said, worthwhile doing this conversion, with filters that are easier to come across, of a potentially better quality (going by how the Unipart filters are these days) in addition for me seeming a little tidier.

Regarding going for a filter with no non return valve, maybe it's the rigorous changes, or the VR1, but my engine builds up pressure quite quickly with the spin on conversion and oil filter (with a non return valve). Almost all filters out there for the Stag (or at least sold by specialists) come with a one way valve in addition to a bypass valve (latter being utilised if the filter becomes blocked for whatever reason). Quicker than it did in comparison to when I bought the car (on a cartridge setup). This surprised me come winter time using 20W50!

                            Thanks for the responses...

The reason for the query is that when I first got my Stag in 2003, I was advised ( by organisation who I wont name) that moving to a spin-on filter was like eating fish & chips with a knife & fork - you just dont do it ! ...Also, having s/steel 4 -branch headers meant that I could not fit the sandwich plate on.

Several years on, I am going to revisit this as I want to put an oil temp gauge in , and use the sandwich plate for the temp take-off.

As to why I am asking about filter size/capacity was to ensure I get the right ones, if there are various to choose from.

                            Regards

                            Malc

Dont know who the organisation is/was but they don't deserve space to give ill conceived opinions......

I have both a spin on and tubular manifolds, both improvements that have been available for many years and easily fitted by all.

                              Cheers!
