i have just checked my drive shaft splines and found one of them to be allmost dry,no damage done thank god,and i was wondering if anyone has put a grease nipple on the sliding spline joint?as far as i can tell it would not require much to do just machine a groove around the spline and then drill the outer sline to take a grease nipple.then all that is required is a few pumps from a grease gun every now and then.has anyone done this mod?i would like to know if they have and if it is worthwhile?allso i have a very small amount of free play on one of my rear wheel bearings.how much,if any,is ok?if it does need adjusting can i tighten the hub nut or do i have to adjust the nut on the inside.
If you do fit grease nipples be careful to not fill the axle with too muchgrease.
The female half of the shaft is hollow all the way through the yoke and is sealed at the end with a plug - a bit like a core plug. It does have a very small vent hole in it but it didn't stop the plug being foced out on my car. The insides of the shaft are then open to any crud that gets thrown at it.
I fitted GKN Rilsans to mine in the end. A really worthwhile mod if you have any problem with sticking shafts / twitching.
