    Door Locking mechanism

When opening my passenger door, grabbing the handle and lifting, you can be mistaking for thinking it’s locked, with rather lot more pressure it will open.
The Door will close without any problems from outside.

When inside the car and pulling on chrome lever it will open door easy, but when you pull it closed the door will bounce open on the lock. You can see that the little chrome lever has stayed sticking out,
when pushing this back flat, you can then pull the door closed and will shut okay

I can’t work out why this is happening here or if something is missing from the locking mechanism. Any ideas on what is going on here?

Hi Rob, nothing's wrong, take the door card off and soak the inner handle mechanism, and the lock and outer handle in spray grease, then work it till everything frees off. Martin.

      Hi, Martin

I will try that this week. Thank you for the advice.

        Hi Rob,
I have the same problem with the chrome lever on my passenger door. The small lever should not sit proud of the larger lever.
There is a small peg/pin as part of the moulding of the small lever which stops it being pulled past the large lever when you open the door. It also ensures that the small lever goes back to its closed position with the large lever.
This pin has snapped off on my car giving the same problem as yours that you cannot close the door without pushing the small lever back into place first. I have got a replacement unit for mine waiting for me to fit it. I believe there is a difference between mk1 and 2 parts but I am not sure what the exact difference is.

I find on my car the difficulty with operating the external door handle from outside is down to adjustment of the door striker plate (or the door itself) which I always find difficult to get right on my mk1.

          Hi Pete

I Had tried what Martin said and oiled up locks, which didn't help, not sure where/understand the small peg/pin as part of the moulding is, so will have to look it up, may be easy to see when I look at it again, but finding it hard to think about it as I've been to the pub and now need sleep. so I can get up tomorrow for National. Thank you for update and will let you know how it goes.

            Hi Rob,

It's easy enough to see just pull the large lever forward and looking down at the smaller lever you can see the peg in the casting (as long as it hasn't snapped off) that restricts its movement. Comparing it with your 'good' side should make it obvious.
