    What spares to carry.

It might be interesting & informative to find out what spares members carry round in their cars when out on a normal run.

Personally I don't have a garage, but do rent a Storeroom where I keep most of my larger tools and bigger Stag spares. In the car itself tools & spares I carry include :-

Tools - Bottle jack, wheelbrace, crow bar, jump leads, screwdrivers & spanners, Plug with wire attached for checking spark level, carb adjusting tool, box of assorted small tools & spares (allen keys, tyre pressure guage, radiator leak fixer, wire, feeler guage, fuses etc), tyre inflator, torch & compass, multi purpose knife, Stanley knife, insulating tape & scissors, magnetic pick-up tool, pliers, workshop manual, towing rope, etc.

Spares - WD40, Coil, Plugs, Air & Oil filters, Engine Oil, Anti-Freeze mix, Redex, lubricant oil, small fire extinguisher, assorted belts & hoses, brake fluid, power steering fluid, mat to lie on whilst underneath the car, grease & glues, STP, flasher unit, carb diaphragm, etc.

By law here I also have to carry - all the car's documents, 2 breakdown triangles, complete spare bulb set, first aid kit, and 2 fluorescent
    waistcoats.

I thought Brake Fluid and Power steering Fluid are the same stuff - or have I been putting the wrong stuff in my power steering?

Seems to work ok though !!

They definitely aren't the same stuff. PSF and auto transmission fluid are pretty well the same thing though.

On a Normal Trip I carry enough kit to change a wheel and top up the coolant and oil.

On a long trip I would probably carry as much as I could fit in the boot:shock:.

Is the brake fluid going to do any harm - I replaced the two hoses from the pump a couple of weeks ago so there is a lot of brake fluid in there! As I said, it is working perfectly.

Oil and air filters and a change of oil? Not sure I'd do a minor service while on the road - that can always wait until I get home

                    Dave,

It all depends on whether or not it will affect the seals. Assuming the seals are made of similar rubber to those in the brake system, then it should be OK, but I have never heard of anyone trying this out before :?. ATF is the correct fluid.

Tdm - by nature would you describe yourself as a pessimist? I carry none of these things with me except on an unusually long journey when I might take a few basic tools.

Not a pessimist - just lazy. If I had my own garage I probably wouln't keep so much in the car. Also my storeroom is on the 7th floor of our Apartment block at the end of a long corridor, and if I have waited for & gone up & down in the lift to get a part or tool, by the time I've used it I usually can't be bothered taking it back again so I just chuck it in the boot.

I also carrya small trolley jack when I found the bottle jack wouldn't fit under with flat wheel (never trust screw jacks). I carry all spares in the hood well..
