Fuel Pump ... repair or replace?

Well, it had to be my turn sooner or later...

On the way to the Weaver Wander road run this morning, whilst travelling on the A483 dual carriageway, my fuel pump decided that it really did not want to do any more work, thankyou very much! I managed to get down a sliproad where a kind chap - who said he owns a Herald - stopped to help me push the Stag off the roundabout onto a quiet road. It took a few minutes to suss out that the fuel pump was at fault but I really can't complain as this is only my second breakdown in 55,000 miles. I managed to just limp the 3 miles home on what felt like one carb. The Stag is just having a tantrum because I have not driven it this week!

I took the pump off and took it apart to find that the points are very badly burnt.

Now my question is, as the rest of the pump seems to be good, should I buy a rebuild kit or replace the whole thing with an electronic pump? I am really wary of replacement parts and wondered if there are any good / bad experiences out there? Can't have any more tantrums!!

    Thanks

    Brian.

Fit an electronic one from LD, Brian - fit and forget.
That's what I did last year when mine packed up.

In case you want to keep the original body, and connections etc., Burlen do an electronic conversion kit for SU pumps.

        <p>Negative Earth Electronic Conversion Kit for all 12 volt SU Fuel Pumps.Converts any 12 volt SU Pump <strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">i</span></strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>n working condition</strong></span>
        The answer isn't 42, it's 1/137

The Burlen conversion is well regarded in many circles, and it seems to allow the pump to deliver the correct pressure. Despite the bad write up SU pumps get they have not treated me that badly over time (and not you going by the miles you have covered!).

A lack of use the SU pumps do not seem to take kindly to though.

Brian, I have just bought a pump from LD, I'm taking it in my spares box for my trip to France in 3 weeks, it looks good quality, I would replace it if I were you

              Hi folks,

many thanks for the help and advice. I really like the idea of converting the original pump to electronic -didn't realise this was possible - but on reflection I have ordered the electronic one from LD. At least with everything new I reasoned that it should be reliable...!!

              Thanks again
              Brian.

                    Hello,

In both my TR6 and the Stag I built in Japanese Mitsuba pumps. I know this is a sacrilege, but in the boot you cannot see them ... Those pumps are "build them in an forget about them" items, not cheap, but very reliable!

                    Good luck!

I fitted the Burlen electronic adapter to the original pump in mine. Works well and does away with the old points problem completely - it has no points!

                      So far it's been fine.

                      Cheers,
                      Mike.

If I needed one, electronic would get my vote.

But I don't need one, and maybe I never will. My pump is turned off, it is not used when running the car on LPG so I doubt I'll wear it out. I flick it on now and then just to excercise it

To answer the inevitable, LPG does not need another pump, tank pressure alone supplies fuel.

                          Regards

                          Steve

I was going to buy the Burlen conversion kit a few years ago but at the time they were selling a new already converted pump for £25 more, so I went that way and kept the old one as a spare.

Well, she lives! I have fitted the electronic pump which LD sell, fitting was quick and easy with no mods needed. I'm going to refurbish the old pump and keep it as a spare... which hopefully will not be needed!

Thanks again for the help and advice.
