Can anyone confirm that the steering column should adjust up and down as well as in and out? mine does not I am assured by the guy working on the car.I thought the last time I had the car it did but that was some months ago.

Another Brian with the same problem. The workshop manual says it should slide in an out. Mine is a Mk 1.5. I know the steering column was out of it just before I got it. Is there a common error in refitting columns, or is the adjustment only on Mk 1s?
Any advice welcome.

Mines a MK 1 and works fine.
Have you checked thats it's been put back correctly, maybe a bit rusty & sticking.

I had been told that only the early ones adjusted for reach so I didn't explore further. I'll leave it till after my MOT this week to explore further. Thanks.

all steering columns are the same Mk1 or MK2, but whats probably happened is the plastic cover over the steering column has been taken off then put back on wrongly covering up the adjuster - this is a common problem, at a show a couple of years ago two owners said they had no adjustment until we looked under the lower plastic cover.

Thanks Ian, We, (bothBrian's)have the adjuster and when it is freed off can adjust up and down, but not in and out, ie the telescopic movement of the column.
