Crankshaft Pulley, Bolt, Spacer, Viscous coupling .... WTF!

Just putting the last bits of the engine together as I'm waiting for gearbox bits to arrive.

This is what the crankshaft pulley etc., looked like when I disassembled the car:

So now I fiitted all back together and it looks about the same:

Except that the bolt doesn't have any "guiding" hole up under the bolt head. It's free to flap about and just align itself as the washer presses against the viscous coupling:

So I checked tha parts book and found that this little fella was missing.

So I ordered up a new one and reassembled all. The bolt is nicely guided by this sleeve now and it all comes together quite nicely........ but! The bolt only engages a couple of threads in the crank (which I'm sure isn't correct) and the whole shooting match looks distinctly weird and elongated:

    HELP! Anyone?

    Thanks

Lose that thing you ordered. I ordered one thinking it was necessary, made the fan eat the rad.
I thought it was wierd that only part of the VC sits on the crankshaft, but with the fan on and the bolt done up tight it seems to work - but what do i know? That thing doesn't fit all the way into VC either. Does it help to put the fan on?
Just done this, but memory is very short!

The bush has a diameter of 23.5mm to house the vc.
This 23.5 section looks like the front part of the pulley for the steering pump,
So the vc will sit snug up against the steering pulley.
just had a vernier on it and it fits the vc, the 6.4 washer sits on top of that then the crank bolt.
      I hope this helps

Yes. The viscous coupling will fit either over the nose of the pump pulley or over the nose of that special bush 159153. I just found it weird that the diameter of the crankshaft bolt is about 14mm so, as it is tightened up and the washer 155516 bites on the viscous coupling there is no centering of the bolt and washer. Looking at the parts pics I could see that the special bush was designed to fit snugly over the pump pulley nose and extend the approx. 14mm dia hole of the pump pulley up into the viscous coupling to better centre the bolt. It acually does that quite well but, unfortunately, the thickness of that special bush is such that the whole shebang gets pushed too far away from the crank nose for the bolt threads to engage correctly.

I guess, if I want to strive for perfection, that a simple bush which sits in the viscous coupling would have done the job.

Still puzzled about that special bush and why it was created and still sells!

            Hi Drew,

I've got three spare crank bolts and the lengths are different. I can't measure them right now but I posted the dimensions on here for someone just a few weeks ago.

Maybe there were longer ones to accomodate that spacer - however, that wouldn't explain what yours was like before dismantling.

            Cheers

            Julian

Ps Just a thought. I have the spacer fitted and the fan runs b****y close to the rad. However, my engine always runs cool, so I wonder whether the spacer is an engine cooling aid

I recently did all this when my original Mk1 fan decided to eat the radiator on drive-it day.

Although the car is an early Mk2, the fan assembly was Mk1. I wanted to fit a new fan and VC and came to the conclusion that the PAS pulley has a projection on the front to fit the VC onto. The Mk1 and Mk2 VC have different inner diameters so the PAS pulley is different for the 2. A Mk2 PAS pulley is made of unobtainium so this adapter was used to fit a Mk2 VC to it all.

Although I did this only a couple of months ago, the fine details are already gone! I shall have to go and take some photos. Certainly the fan is close to the radiator but I do have just enough space to get a fan belt in there.

I used the original (MK1) bolt, so maybe that is longer than the one you have?

              Cheers,
              Mike.

                Drew,

I'll have a look at mine tonight, only just put it all back together but I really don't remember there being a spacer there only that one pulley fits neatly inside t'other and the other.

My fan runs about 1/2 - 3/4 inch away from the rad as it did before I re-built.

                Cheers,
                Mike

Thanks Drew for confirmng my reservations about putting the whole shebang together. I was worried I'd done something wrong.
There must a ton of those spacers sold and then thrown into a box!

Here are some pictures of more doorstops I have:
Mk 1 VC with Mk 1 PAS pulley (old and brown) with new Mk 2 PAS pulley for comparison. The old VC looks like it has a spacer inside the centre hole, but I can't remove it; is that where the spacer goes in real life?? Sorry, no Mk 2 VC for comparison, that's on the car!

The new old crankshaft pulley I ordered from the USA came with a Mk 2 PAS pulley so I have these bits and bobs spare. You can have hours of fun putting this combination of parts together, especially when you have no clue what you are doing
