Don't forget that the temp setting of the stat is the minimum that the engine will run. I have settled for an 82degree stat to give a bit of a margin and it works fine with the dial just above the'E' on the gauge. If you go for the 88 stat it should be a minimum of vertical on the gauge. That is why with the elec pump and the stat is removed the engine does not get hot enough.
