The Stag Fastback Prototype - request for pictures and thermostat choice....

    Evening All
As my Stag book progresses and the renovation of XMB 284M progresses I've a couple of questions -
Firstly has anyone got a couple of pictures of the Stag Coupe prototype that I could use in the book - I would like a shot or two of the back, preferably with the hatch open and shut and a good side shot - Free copy of the book to anyone who can supply (but I do need them to have taken the pics so they own the copyright and can give me the rights to use them in the book). While I'm not devoting a lot of space to the Hatch it does need to be included.....

Secondly - merits of an 88 degree thermostat as opposed to an 82 degree one - What does the forum think? - I've got an 88 in mine at the moment and its seems to be running hotter (i.e. temp gauge up at 1 or 2 o'clock (its a Mk II) than I want it to - I'd be happier for the gauge to to sit at 12 o'clock...)

    Cheers

    Matt

Hi, Sadly your temp gauge is as useful as a chocolate teapot, fit a proper one to get some idea of what your temperature actually is. I use an 88 and she runs constantly at 90c.
I have some pics of the hatchback, I'll hunt them out, some are 5 meg and some are 12. If you PM me your email address I'll get them to you. Martin.

As a rule of thumb I find most of my Triumphs sit with the gauge a needle width below half on an 82 degree 'stat, and a needle width above on an 88 degree stat, but I agree with Martin about how useful the gauge is.

I usually find the problem is in the voltage regulator rather than the sender, incorrect fuel gauge readings tend to confirm this. This was the case on my Stag recently, I rooted out three used voltage regulators which gave three different fuel and temp gauge readings. I ended up binning that lot and buying a new one.

I have just had to change a very erratic Thermostat on the Stag engined TR, it normally sits at a needle width below half with the 82 degree stat fitted, but yesterday coming down the M6 in 85 degree sunshine it was sitting a needle width above 3/4.
I think I need to bypass the resistor in the feed to my electic water pump for hot weather as it only runs on 8 volts normally, fine for the last 3 years but not this year!

On the Stag is the voltage regulator integral to the alternator?

For the charging system, yes, on later models.

However all cars have a voltage regulator that, IIRC, takes voltage down to 10v for the temperature and fuel gauges.

          Cheers

No, Matthew, it is attached to the back of the speedometer. This is what you are looking for: http://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/Item--i-148876A

Solid state ones are now available and often for sale on eBay. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Triumph-Fo...#ht_905wt_1399

Hi Matt I have original photos of fastback 6105 KV being built in Italy given to me by the studio so no problems with copyright as I have authorisation to use as I want even tho some people have been using them without permission. Also photos of stag shell being converted to fastback in Italy this being No 2 fastback prototype. The 3rd fastback that people say wasn't built was and is alive and kicking owned by Alan Hart. Please be careful what you write and double check it is correct because a lot of rubbish has been said in the past. If you want to see and use my phots please contact me. Regards Dave
