water temp gauge going off the scale!!

Hi i have 3 problems maybe all conected? Went for a drive over the weekend ,always starts from cold and hot ok but would not start from hot, was parked up on a hill so rolled down and started but only just!Before this it was spluttering a bit in first and second gear,sounds like fuel, had a new filter a year ago not many miles since.Went to put the car away later and as soon as the ignition is on water temp gauge goes off the scale,tried it next day engine cold same thing anyone any ideas. First I'd just look to see if the wire has broken off the sender, then I'd wonder if the other (such as fuel) gauges are talking sense. If not - think instrument voltage regulator on the back of the speedo.
Off the top of my head, I can't think of anything that might connect all the symptoms - as the temp circuit is pretty much an item on it's own.

Welcome to the forum

If you put the ignition on from cold and it goes off the scale, then its the gauge or wiring that is causing an earthing.
