DISCONNECT SENDER WIRE from the engine sensor
gauge should now be reding cold
connect sender wire to earth, gauge should now read full

probebly the sender faulty, especially if the fuel gauge is ok

I had this happen a few weeks ago but it only went half way, changed the switch and its fine, but test it first by removing the wire and make sure it does not move, then earth the wire and the needle should go up, if this works then it is the switch

You could always bin that gauge and get a capilliary one M.

            Definitely!

Electric gauges are just too untrustworthy/remote

Electrickery was supposed to be an advance on the old capillary/mechanical gauges.
Of course - the most reliable indicators are the steam powered ones.
When steam is coming out - you KNOW it's overheated

Sender shorting to earth, simple as that. Gauge test procedure exactly as described by Alan, also very simple.

All that said, I'm about to go backwards with technology to fit the caplliary item, as it is part of the dual oil pressure / temp guage. Both gauges in this combination are capilliary driven and inherently simpler. The real difference is in failure, when the electric one fails it may read high, it capilliaries fail they mostly don't read at all and leak. On balance, I'm happier having a gauge to show me oil pressure as part of the deal, you pay your money and take your choice.

                Regards

Had this set-up for years Steve and it is so much better, as used on MGB's from the start.

                  Cheers

Love the dual-gauge setup I fitted to Buttercup, works really well.
