Non Stag but old tool related

    Hi Guys,
Like many older Stag owners, I've built up a collection of old Britool items over the years.
My big socket set boxes (which were second/third hand to start with) have suffered and there's not a lot left of the outer paintwork.
They seemed to have some sort of red and black 'cracked ice' finish? I used to think this was just age but looking at pics on ebay, I think a lot were originally like that. Anyone remember or know how to replicate this finish?
    Cheers Johny

      Thanks Drew,
The hammerite finish seems closest but the box finish looks cracked and two-coloured. I'll pop some photos on later.

        Johny,

        interesting subject (albeit not Stag)

I have had my Britool sets from new (over 35 years now) 3 of my sets 3/8",1/2" & 3/4" drive are finished in a plain colour but another is how you describe and I think made like that if you compare the outside with the inside. I have a 1/4" drive set but that is in a much later case as I had to buy it to replace the Snap on one I had which someone else took a liking too

The first 2 pictures are the finish you asked about and the other 3 are the plain colour which appears to be the same as the inside of the first one. picture 4 (3/4" drive set) is pristine as it has never been in the daylight and lived in the draw of my roll cab all these years.

I have a mixture of hand me downs. My favourite is a Hazet set. It's so old but all works perfect. Has anyone heard of Hazet. My friend spent 4 grand on snap on and that's just the tool box ( rip off I think )

            Hi Edd,

Hazet is one of the best known and most popular brands of high-quality tools in Germany. For me however often too expensive, even used.

Another high quality German tool maker is "Stahlwille" they can make Snap on look cheap, I have always bought Britool as I was able to benefit from a 40% discount (not to be confused with the rubbish modern stuff branded as Expert) and it has lasted for years and if needed you could buy spares for the Racthets and so on for the parts that will wear with use, a lot of the people I worked with had Snap on, all very nice but your paying for the name unfortunately.

I do confess to having some Snap on stuff including a top chest that I got for a bargain price, but It always had to be an absolute bargain for me to buy it from the man in the van

                Just as foot note,

I learnt from my good friend some time ago who owns a large motor factors and has been an agent for Britool since year dot that it is now owend by Stanley tools who also own Facom. Most of the stuff is bought in and branded as Britool having been produced in Taiwan and China

I'm the same if I was my living I would buy mac or snap on. With the lifetime gaurantee they last forever. If ever I have a slightly rounded nut the very few snap on spanners I do have save the day where others just make things worse. A set of six sider sockets is a must too. My friend has a battery operated impact gun and its so powerful. I though Hazet might me be German ummm I wonder who else likes them

Yes, Hazet has a phenomenally large range of tools. Whereas others have a tool for getting stones out of horses' hooves, Hazet make one for Paint Horses, one for Lippizaner horses and one for Cleveland Bay horses !!

Not to forget Gedore of course!

Thanks for the pictures Ian and other comments guys. I'm convinced now that the red and black cracked ice look was pretty common.
I have one like that, also a red which looks a lot like Drew's hammerite swatch pic (looks original), a plain red like Ian's socket box and also black.

I'm guessing that their value may be part invested in their rusty looks but some are so far gone...
So any ideas on replicating the red/black finish? It looks like the top black layer is deliberately designed to shrink leaving the cracked red gaps.
                      Cheers Johny

Glad I'm not the only one with a few Gedore tools that seem to go on and on.
