Import duty, does anyone know how much..Not Stag

Not Stag related other than the bodyshell will end up sitting on them..

I'm talking to Harbor Fright Tools in the US about sending me some 8" Pneumatic Swivel Caster wheels.
I need 14 but will possibly buy 20 as the shipping is the same.
The same wheels are over twice the price here even taking in to account the shipping

I have never imported anything before and not sure how customs charge and when..
I do have a VAT registered business that I can use to purchase if necessary..

Can anyone guide me in the right direction..

    Thanks

    Sam

Sorry Sam but I can't help you. I've bought a lot of stuff from these folk, perhaps worth a look ? http://www.castors-online.co.uk/acatalog/ Martin.

      Have a look here, http://www.dutycalculator.com/help_c...nited-Kingdom/

When imported a couple of carbs a few years ago I think I paid something like 80 quid in import taxes but can't remember for sure.

Ive bought stuff for about £140 and it cost me about £30 import which included the £11 or £12 courier fee to process it.

          cheers Steve

At a guess I would say UK Import VAT (same rate as UK VAT) + import duty which seems to be 2,7% for non-aerospace simple castors

            The answer isn't 42, it's 1/137

              Sam,

Customs duty can be charged by weight, volume or value (amongst other things). HMRC have a tariff based on commodity codes, each code relating to a specific type of goods. To calculate the total imported cost, add the value (in £) and the customs duty together and then put the dreaded 20% on top.

If you're really lucky, the goods might just slip though unnoticed depending on how the vendor sends, packages and describes the goods. However, if they are spotted on import by HMRC they may well hold them until you pay the customs duty and VAT.

Sorry but I can't help with the relevant tariff / commodity code which would tell you the customs duty rate.

To reclaim the VAT through your business, you should order the goods through the business (business name on the invoice) to keep the VAT guys happy in the event you actually get a visit from those venerable people.

That's why I posted the link to the code (non aerospace castors with metal base) and the duty percentage in the previous post.

My experience (over 30 years of working for companies based outside the UK) is that it's a bit of a lottery.

There are different interpretations of the "correct" category to put something in.
As an example - a carrier tried to extract $40 in duty from me, on a $50 torch. Paid for in US$, but actually sent from within the EU.

And it's down to the shipper how they declare it - you just get lumbered with the results.

So I wish (IMHO) there was a single "correct" answer to offer - but I don't think that there is.
Well - maybe there is - but whose version of "correct" is the thing that's open to debate.

                    Good luck.

                    Adrian.

Many thanks to everyone for the information given.
I will follow up the links and make a better informed decision.
Although it seems like it might be too much of a lottery with duty etc to take a chance..
I just get fed up with us in the UK paying so much for everything...

Don't forget that the guy who is selling the stuff from the USA is maybe only earning half what his counterpart in the UK would! Maybe pay cuts in UK is the answer ......

Well - at least we'd pay for it ourselves in pounds. We wouldn't expect cross border handouts in Euros paid for by another country

Haven't got the faintest idea what that statement has got to do with the moan that everything in UK is expensive.

I'm thinking about the poor German taxpayer subsidising Europe - but as we don't have the Euro?
And if we got paid more - things wouldn't seem as expensive!
