    Here we go again!

MOT time again = new set of rear drive shaft gaiters.

I think this will be the FOURTH set I've fitted in the 5 1/2 years I've owned my Stag.

    Getting really cheesed off now!

I've just had a thought, if I make a set out of tissue paper they might last a bit longer!

I have a pair of new ones in the shed to fit to my spare rebuilt drive shafts but think I may be better off cutting my loses and reusing the old ones still on the car when I change them from what some folk are saying

If they have lasted over 6 months then I would hold on to them.

That said, apparently Stuart Souter has had some remanufactured that should be of better quality than the rubbish that was around when I bought my last set.

It's just a matter of who stocks them!

I've just gone for a random punt and am trying Chris Wittor this time around.

            Doh!
My gaiters were on since 1992, having just rebuilt the rear end I thought may as well fit new gaiters as the old ones where looking a bit grubby,
And I even threw the old ones away?

What part goes?, I changed the smaller inners, but the big outers still looked like new so they are still fitted.

                  Hiya,

I think I would call the inner ones the big ones! Anyway, the 'bellows' shaped one - part number 140753. As I said, Decent ones have apparently now been produced so hopefully the good ones are what the suppliers are now providing. you may be lucky.

Oh how familiar this sounds see my thread "swear swear curse and more swear"
I have just had the same problem I would not mind paying double the price if only the bloody things would last.
What was more annoying is the ones that were probably 40 years old I changed just because they did not look good but they were fine with no holes just scruffy.
I did also find the rubbers that I had used for the drag strut were also in the same condition so poly ones fitted now.
Off for its MOT tomorrow morning .
The boots from Peter at LD seemed OK and at least they smelt of rubber not some plastic crap.

                    Paul.

My gaiters had started to fail on my front shocks, at the MOT the man said it would fail unless I wanted to pull the remains of the gaiters off, seemed you didnt need gaiters for an MOT, but if fitted, they would have to be in good shape.

Does anybody know if this is the case with the drive shaft gaiters?
In which case, until known good ones are available, just remove the perished ones for the mot, then wrap a bit of protective rubber held on with a couple of tie wraps to protect until next MOT time.

                        Ian,
The spare new ones I have are made by County by the looks of it, that's what it says on the bags there in. I opened one up and then seem to smell of Rubber.

Is that good news or bad

                          Well MOT'd today all passed.
The tester said that due to the Stag not having dual circuit breaks then the hand brake needs to reach an efficiency of 25% where as a modern car only has to make 16%. Well mine made 28%!

I did notice that the boots on the rear handbrake at the brake back plate are starting to go yet another recent part thats failed.

                          Paul.

Paul the MOT tester is an Idiot and does not know what he's looking at, the Stag has dual circuit brakes, that's why it has a tandem master cylinder and the PWDA switch It has a front/rear split and not a diagonal split but unless the regs have changed then that's not an issue.

Replace the drive shaft gaiters with universal steering rack gaiters, they last for years as they are designed to stretch far more than they are required to do when fitted to the driveshafts.
