    Electric fan

Morning all, I am after a little advice if you would be so kind! I have managed to get my Stag back on the road and on the few occasions that I have be able to drive it stag Paranoia has put it's vice like grip on me and I cannot take my eyes of the temperature gauge! I must admit that the recent hot weather has played a part, on me not the car, and as a result I am thinking that I should fit an electric fan. The question is what type? What size? And should it be single or twin speed?
your help on the matter would be as ever very helpful, and maybe when I have one fitted I will be able to spend more time looking at the road rather than the Temp gauge.

    Many thanks AGAIN!

    Hi Paul.
Before you fit a fan just tell me where your temp gauge sits.
First of all when cruising and then when in traffic etc..all your parts are new including the engine so lets have the details as you(your car) shouldnt be getting too warm..

Hi Sam, the needle normally sits smack bang in the middle, but the other day when I was caught in some traffic it moved to the three quarter position but then came back down when I was on the move but just slightly above mid way. It was on a very very hot day mind you. I have noticed that I have a small leak from the expansion bottle where the metal top is crimped onto the plastic so that must be leaking pressure therefore lowering the boiling point of the water, so I need to get a new one of those, although I am toying with the idea of fitting a header tank. Decisions decisions!

      Regards

        Hi Paul

Yes I see what you mean.On a very very hot day that is probably acceptable, however I like you would want it not to get that far..

The last electric fan I had was quite a small Kenlowe.
I think things have moved on since then and I am sure someone here will be able to tell you which best suits.

The header is a good idea anyway, again lots of variants.
Also consider V Mads shroud for the radiator..

        Thats me done

          Paul,

Speaking as a recent Stag convert, all of your paranoia is recognisable and shared here! I doubt if I gave more than a glance to a car temp. gauge in the last 20 yrs before this. Now I don't even know where I've driven to!

Until I got timing problems last week I adopted a policy of turning the heater on when the needle approaches half-way or more, which does work, after a fashion.

Until SWMBO is in the car that is.....I just can't get her to see the logic of having the heater burning our feet on the hottest day of the year.

          Women!

          Regards

            Hi Paul,

purely for piece of mind I fitted a 14" 2 speed Kenlowe kit last year, It was £174 delivered direct from them. I also have the wards header tank fitted not cheap at £200 with the silicone Y hose but very neat (picture in my profile)

In my view. whether you want an electric fan or not is a purely personal choice. I went through this a couple of years ago just before doing a 4 day run across Europe in the Stag with a newly built engine. In the end I took the advice of the engine builder (Trevor at Favershams) who said basically Why do I think I need one?, my response was because a lot of other people have them. I never fitted the fan, have never needed one, even this last week, I know where the needle climbs to in hot weather and after long motorway runs. The only thing I did for peace of mind was fit a Mercedes header tank and a new 4 row radiator.

There - having said that it'll overheat now

I fitted the two speed kenlowe fan from Wards, although I did not use (and firmly don't recommend) the "through rad" fixings.

Works a treat, and the higher speed provides a reserve of cooling that is very reassuring. Don't think it has ever triggered automatically, the lower speed is really all it needs for 99% of the time, the manual override switch provides paranoia reserve!
Header tanks - you can't beat a bit of bling.

I have a 16" single speed kenlowe controlled by a rovotec temp controller which sits in the top hose, it's much better than the ugly switch the, kenlowe comes with

Have you seen the "through rad" fixings fail then Wilf? I don't like the idea but I can't see that Kenlowe would recommend them if they'd had many failures?

I really don't want to tempt fate but I have had my kenlowe fixed through the rad for 6 years, no issues.........yet

My local radiator repairer loved them, great for business, he said.

I have a two speed Kenlowe fitted to my Stag and no engine driven fan, it does the job of both.

I used the through the rad fixings on the first Stag but after all the scare stories I have solid mounted the Kenlowe on the project Stag.
It does say in the fitting bumf that the fixings must be tight or damage to the rad can occur. The fixings that come with the Kenlowe are very tough and can be pulled very tight. However I bought some ebay ones for fitting a two speed Kenlowe to my V8 Toledo and although they looked identical they were much weaker and I am not happy with them.

Thanks for the comments Gentlemen, sorry for the delay in my response but I have had Internet issues with the lovely Sky company, how helpful there are.....not! I suppose my reason for fitting the fan is because so many on here, with far more knowledge and experience than myself, have deemed it a wise if not necessary thing to do. Having rebuilt the engine myself I have the added worry that I have got everything right and so the added security of another fan will make the driving that more enjoyable, which, at the moment it isn't as I am always looking at the dials. Your comments are duly noted.
thanks for your input as always
