    All fixed!

    Hi,
I was given so much great advice on here recently when I developed spluttering in my mk2.
After many helpful ideas and reading previous posts, I gave the old Lucas coil a burial yesterday and replaced with a Bosch Red.
Wow, what a difference. No more splutter, no more hiccups/missing, smooth rev range to the top, great torque and most surprising of all is that the water temp is lower (sits at 1/3 rather than 1/2. Im guessing the poor running added some heat)...all for under £47.00! Like a new car.
Just though I would update and say thanks to all.
    Dom.

Hi Dom, good to hear you've fixed it, I've been thinking of swapping my coil too. You say "Bosch Red", do you have a full spec so I can be sure I get the same one? Cheers Adrian

      Hi Rich,
Bosch only make two coils, one red and one blue. It seems that the blue is ballasted and the red is not (i.e. perfect for the Mk2). If you Google 'bosch red coil' you will find some suppliers there. I simply telephoned my local auto spares shop and asked him to get one in, was there the next day.
I came across this coil after many hours reading this forum and quite a few people recommended it. Its wax filled so is less likely to be effected by the heat of the engine and is a quality item. I can certainly say that all the rough running problems I have had since I bought the car a year ago have vanished with this coil, seems to have been money well spent.
      Hope that helps.
      Dom

        Adrian,
As you can see, I failed to spot that your name isn't Rich!
        Sorry

Guys, I thought I should mention that stags were originally fitted with ballasted coils.

Thanks Dom, the one I could see on e-bay was a red one with a separate resistor as per Mk1 Stag spec which implies this is right one. V Mad, do you have an alternative recommendation for a quality coil of the right spec? Ta, Adrian .

              Adrian,
If you have a look at some other sites, you will see that the red one comes with a resistor for around £70 or without for around £47.
Good luck choosing, took me ages!
              Dom.

I just had a look and it says the Bosch red is the ballasted one (blue is not) so the red should work OK. Bosch should be a safe bet. I think Intermotor is also a good brand.

I thought mk2 stags had a ballast wire to the coil? I have a 12v flamethrower coil so have disconnected the ballast wire (white and pink wire IIRC)

Bosch Reds are superb coils and have the correct resistance for a Triumph Stag. They are very trusty. Cheap however they are not.

Intermotor IMHO tend to be variable at best. On my moderns the coilpacks were not a patch on genuine or Bosch/Beru items (I had strange and almost incurable backfiring/misfiring issues at low revs under load (I.e pulling awa), as did another friend of mine with the same car until he went genuine), and their rotor arms once left me stranded at the top of the A46 in Coventry in a 1970 VW Beetle during rush hour (the resistor in the rotor arm decided it would die).

Thanks for the advice Guys, at least fitting will be a doddle. Next, sorting out the carburettors ...

                        Chas,

I haven't done too well with Intermotor stuff either. Fitted a new IM rotor arm to a Range Rover and it made it backfire so badly I put the old one back on.

Have to give some thought to the Bosch Red though, I've had coil problems already, but although I have a Mk2, I haven't seen a ballast resistor yet. Maybe the PO took it off??

                        Regards

                        Steve

Its built in to the wiring loom on a mk2, Steve, so you won't see it. Its the white pink wire.

                            Al,

Thanks, that's really useful, especially as I know I have a pnk/white wire. Looks like Bosch Red for me next parts spend (a weekly thing at the moment!)
