I plan to rebuild my steering rack ,which is dumping ever increasing amounts of fluid. I can't find a good guide for doing this. The one in the workshop manual isn't very comprehensive. Any body done this before. I know most will say go for a replacement, but I'm partly curious and totally skint so having bought the seals thought I would have a go. Mike

It's not a difficult thing to do but if there is any sign of scoring on the rack where it contacts the seals you are wasting your time.
The ROM tells you all you need to know, cleanliness and lots of new PAS fluid on reassembly are the key things to remember.

Have a go...done mine a while back, but can not check it yet as car is not yet finished. The white ptfe washers will grant you hours of joy, they will stretch over to fit but don't shrink back to size. You need to get them back in the tube to force them down to size again...just my experience.

Try this: http://www.triumphstag.net/start/index.htm
From the LH index panel select Technical Area => Suspension & Steering. Then scroll down to find the instructions for dismantling power steering rack, and link to diagram 57.07. This is followed by Assembling Power Steering Rack. There is also good info on the control valve.Dave

Personally I replaced the leaking seals on the rack and left the control valve assembly alone on a "if it ain't broke don't fix it" basis.
Done this twice now with the Stag and the Estate, and will do the same on the project stag if it leaks (it looks like it has already been done but has been stood for years)

Hi Guys need you help, have bumped this up to date, as having trouble removing the screwed ring that holds the end housing on the rack, I do not have tool no S355, have tried tapping the ring, but too no avail.

Just hit it a bit harder Martin, it will move with a blunt drift and club hammer.
