    Viscous Coupling problems

I posted a message a few days back regarding a load rattling / screaming noise coming from the engine after I had a new viscous coupling and radiator fitted
    by my local garage.

It sounded like timing chains and I was pretty sure that the local Garage had fitted the viscous coupling incorrectly.

I dropped the car into Faversham Classic who have advised that the timing chains did need replacing , but that the noise was mainly coming from the new Viscous coupling supplied by Rimmers that was 'completly shot'.

Apparently if I had carried on driving the car the likelyhood is that the Viscous Coupling would have forced the retaining bolt out and the fan hitting and damaging the radiator which is what had happened with the viscous coupling I had replaced. This was however 13 years old and done 10,000 miles.

The new viscous coupling had done only 10 miles !

It is possible that my local garage did fit the viscous coupling incorrectly , but there is also a possibility that Rimmers have a bad batch.

Has anyone else had any recent problems with quality of replaced Viscous Couplings?

    Hi Crabbo,

It appears to happen a few times that a new coupling packs up, my car had a new one fittedbefore i bought it only for it to pack up 2 days into ownership but after getting in touch with Paddocks who supplied it, they happily replaced it, only took 2 days to deliver so good one Paddocks, reading your previous post i'm a bit dubious whether your garage fitted it properly, having to machine it:shock:does'nt sound right. Did they forget to put the spigot on before they tried to torque it up? as this would certainly damage the coupling. Nearly had the same problem when i fitted mine, left my spigot in the old coupling so did'nt notice there had to be one until i was having problems trying to fit it, good old forum came to the rescue.

      Hi crabbo,

I've had the same problem than you: I have replaced the viscous coupling of my Stag (I think it was the original one) by a Rimmer bros part. I've made only 300 miles before to have the same kind of noise than yours. Rimmer send me a new one (under guranty) and I have no problem .... for the moment (I've just drive around 400 miles since he replacement). A friend of mine has had the same bad experience with a Rimmer viscous coupling after only 100 miles. Its obvious that there is a quality problem with the refabrication of viscous coupling. And there is only one manufacture nowadays, its is impossible to find alternatives... If I experience another problem with viscous coupling I will put an electric fan!
