Car Ramps

Hi all,

I want to get a set of ramps, but are standard ramps ok or do I need the type with an extension for cars with low clearance?

Any advice would be appreciated.

I've got some normal ramps from Halfords which are fine. Only problem is stopping them sliding when trying to get onto them. Usually have to wedge them somehow.

If I was buying more I would look at the hydraulic ramps from CJ Autos, these you just drive on and then wind them up.

I always have that problem because I'm working on gravel.

However, if you're working on tarmac or concrete, an easy answer is to tie a few feet of webbing or something similar to the front of the ramp. As the car tyre drives over it it traps the webbing and prevents the ramp from moving - simples

Remove the gravel,and can you come and move mine whilst you are at it..

I'm on gravel as well so same problem. I have an edge going into the garage I can butt the ramps up to, but you have to commit yourself to getting on the ramps with a bit of momentum, otherwise the wheels spin on the gravel.

Second the CJ Auto ramps
I often borrow Dave M's and they pump up to a greater height than normal ramps

I must have had my ramps for over 30 years. Well traveled UK to Canada to New Zealand and hardly ever used. As Julian suggested wrapping a piece of carpet or the like around the bottom rung stops them slipping but after driving over the end once in my Hillman Hunter -that makes it about 1979ish - I never use them. I much prefer trolley jack and axle stands.

Talking of ramps , i keep looking at the ramps they show cars on at main dealers, you drive up them and they see-saw forward when you are over the centre then legs lock them at that height, they look good, anyone tried them!

This is one of those times that I can sit here feeling smug.
Never noticed a problem myself - even on wet grass at a show.
Though I guess converting a car to four wheel drive these days might be seen as a slightly extravagant solution to the problem of sliding ramps
But in the past I used a variation on the webbing theme - and used a strip of old carpet.Works well

I think they need to go to be weighed in with the next load of scrap..

I'd have said that every Triumph should have a set of "Standard" ramps

I've got a set of Halfords Ramps, I attached a length of closed cell foam to the bottom of mine with Duck tape. It does the job nicely. (It was cut from the end of a sleeping bag camping mat)

I have the CJ Auto's hydraulic ramps and they work fine and give you much more room underneath. However you have to be a bit careful because in pumping them up, the car is pushed away from them so if you leave it in gear or with the handbrake on, quite a force builds up and suddenly the ramps slip on the ground and frighten the living daylights out of you.

I never thought of the carpet trick to stop the ramps slipping whilst driving forwards on to them, but I'll give it a go next time.
