    Chain Tensioner Advice

Whilst tackling a few other jobs (cam buckets, valve clearances, fan, oil and coolant changes) I thought I'd take the opportunity to check the chains as my engine has always seemed slightly rattly even when warmed up, although the chains have done less than 10k.

With the RH can cover off, looking down at the LH tensioner, it appears to be out about 6 or 7 mm, the question is do leave well alone or do I investigate further? or are there any other checks I can do without taking the timing cover off?

    many thanks

    Dave

Is it the timing chains rattling or something else?

The chains shouldn't rattle provided the tension is correct, and the position of the tensioner looks about right for 10,000 miles.

Check your viscous coupling, I have just changed the chains on an engine that had covered an unknown mileage and had been dragged in by the RAC following a deadful front end rattle. The chains needed doing as the tensioners had virtually reached the end of their travel, but upon reassembly it became evident that the bearing in the viscous coupling was knackered, and the fan blades span freely.

      Hi Neil,

Thanks for the advice re. the tensioner's looking about right for 10k, it helps quell the paranoia, and thus probably best to leave be for another 10k.

I'm not sure whether its the chains rattling or not some noise does appear to be coming from the front end of the engine, however the LH head is loudest which is why I'm attending to the cam buckets and clearances, so maybe I'll get a better idea when these are done.

I checked the viscous and the fan goes about 1/2 turn when spun, I'm assuming this is ok.

      cheers

Hi Dave, see if the blades will move backwards and forwards, there should be NO movement. Martin.
