    Sam,

I use the serpentine cover pump etc on my 3.9 and I converted the crankshaft pulley to take 2 V belts and fitted 2 belts, 1 for the water pump & alternator & 1 for the Stag type steering pump. I welded a centre rib on the pulley and machined it back to accept the V belts. I'm not over impressed with the result, which works admirably, and i'm considering reverting back to 1 belt with the rover steering pump or equivalent. Far easier to fit and align the pump.
Re pipewrok, as per other contributors, I use Pirtek who, locally, are generally happy to help.

Thanks all.I'm getting lots of useful info from each reply..

I think the set-up will work, the sticking point I have at the moment is that with the serp belt system it needs a tensioner.
Now I cannot see on my engine where that will go.I dont know if the chap that did the conversion changed the front end stuff away from standard..

I'm going to take the rad off tomorrow and see if things are any clearer.
Does anyone run this serp belt set-up and have any pics...

      Many thanks

I think I am getting a bit closer to sorting the set-up out..

I today called the Guy that built the car and he told me it was a Brand new engine but he wanted to retain the distributor, and that the front end was the old type design..

I cannot see where the belt tensioner would go.Does "old type front"mean no tensioner..Here is what I have so far.

Also the vacuum advance on the dizzy catches the pump.Does anyone know if a shorter one is available,or what would happen if I took 10-20mm off it..

        Thanks

        Sam

          Sam,

Thats an easy one to sort. You have a tensioner, the alternator already tensions the existing belt so you can use that. Find a belt that will loop the lot and your problem is solved. Flatten off the face of the steering pump pulley as per the others, or source an alternative, realign if required to get it lining up correctly.

Turn the distributor 60 degrees clockwise and move each HT lead 60 degrees anticlockwise and the vacume advance will be out the way.

            Thanks John.

I wasnt sure if with the additional pas pulley that the existing way of tensioning would be substantial enough..
Neil suggested the lead move as well so thanks for that.I need my logical head on when I do that..

Sounds daft but which way would you route the belt ?

              Sam,
alternator, water pump, steering pump, crank pulley. You will get more than enough tension using the movement in the alternator. Your hardest challenge is finding the correct belt.

                  Sam,

                  If you are intending to go down the multi-track belt route;

The belts can be ordered from a good motor factor's. First, count the number of PEAKS you need the belt to have (the one off the old car could give you this easily).

Then, accurately measure tightly around all pulleys using the correct runs and with the adjustment fully forward (to keep that in hand for later). Note that total length down in mm's. Multi-track belts are sold and stocked in standard lengths (but as a loop of course) and all you have to do is get both of the above (Peaks and length) to see what the closest standard option is.

                  Good Luck

I forgot to say that the belt manufacturer's stock number is a simple code for the peaks and length, i.e 6PK 1225.
The most common manufacturer seems to be GATES.

                      Good Luck
