Hi Dave, thank you for replying.. What am I looking for that's bigger? I have a 73 model and am looking to replace the doors, I have been offered one, it's a bare shell but I don't know what to look for?

on the outside of the door at the back is where the lock mech is, its a recessed hole, the size of the hole will tell you if mk1 or mk2, you can fit mk1 or mk2 to a car but you would have to change the lock mech on the b-post
Hi Paul
Dave has explained most of what you need to know to tell the difference.
Fitting Mk1 doors to Mk2 cars and visa versa is not an easy task,so try to buy the right one for your car.
This is a Mk 2 lock. The Mk 1 has aslightly more rounded, all metal casing- none of the white plastic. As has been suggested, I wouldn't even think of fitting the 'wrong' door.
Just to confuse the issue, this is a Mk2 door frame converted to Mk1 spec. This was discovered during the rebuild and, judging by the layers of paint, was done many years ago in the cars early life. The door lock section from a Mk1 has been welded into the door frame after the recessed section was cut out.
Hi Malc, me fitting central locking would be a while off as am collecting parts for a full restoration. I am sure I am telling you how to suck eggs..... Pump in central locking on the forum, there are a few useful threads with pictures that may help. One thing I will do is do the cut outs for central locking before the doors go into the paint shop.
Can anyone recommend the best central locking kit?
