    Inlet manifold gaskets

Hello once again stagland . Long time since my last stupid question, so I feel duty bound to ask another. My mk2 has started to collect coolant at the back of the V around the distributor. I cannot get it to leak whilst running or once I've turned it off, but if I go back and check after 15 - 30 minutes its there. I'm guessing its the manifold gasket at the rear of the the left bank but I couldn't say for sure. My question is, can I remove the manifold / carb assembley in one piece or is it best to remove the pedestal first, also if this is the way forward will it interfere with any carb settings ? . Is there any other possibly troublesome areas to check - ie core plugs ?
    Thanks people. Ian

Water pump. That's what it was on mine :-)

      hi,
remove the air cleaner by removing the six bolts that attatch the elbows to the carbs, remove front air intake gaiter, release vacuum hose from the carb pedistal, undo the choke cables at the carbs, undo the throttle cable, remove the cam cover to carb breather pipes, remove the vacuum advance pipe and its fitting, undo and place to one side the overflow pipes ,same with the fuel pipes(seal there ends so no dirt gets in)
unfo centre bolt on pedistal and remove carbs. drain coolant inc block, remove all bolts from manifolds, remove all hoses from maninifold

      its all in the rom

You could try gently nipping up the inlet manifold bolts and adding a bottle of K Seal to the coolant which may cure your problem, mine turned out to be a leaking water pump seal though, you can see a slot at the back of the water pump cover in the vee, if coolant is leaking from there its the pump. Removing the carbs as Alan suggests shouldnt alter any settings apart from the throttle and choke cable settings which are easy to put back.

Hello Ian. I did exactly as Alan says except I left all the carb cables attached and just swung the carbs out of the way. That gave me ample room to remove the manifold and access the pump.
          Best of luck
