Petrol tank leaks - Triumph but not Stag

The fuel tank in my 2.5PI estate has decided to leak

I have got the tank out - which is the same as a Stag tank - and I have found the most minute pinhole on the bottom... it is so tiny that I had to really search for it!! I was thinking of trying one of the slosh type sealants but I notice in a previous thread that there is reference to using fibreglass on the outside of the tank. I was wondering if anyone has had any success with this repair? Or JB weld possibly? I really want to replace the tank but a quick repair would be ideal until I have more time.

    Any advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks
    Brian.

Brian I recently did my Stag tank with the POR kit from Frosts and it worked great. The stuff dried as hard as glass and seems to have bonded very well.

      Hi brian

I too ban recommend both the por15 and jb weld. I've used both in the past. I've also tried fibre glass with no long term success

      Have you spoken with bryn?

I used Petro Patch many years ago - it lasted quite a long time with no further leaks.

            Just before you do Brian.

Many years ago I used fibre glass on the outside of a Stag tank and it worked fine..

I used the POR15 system many years ago with fantastic results. You must follow the instructions exactly and do not cut any corners and you will end up with a tank completely recoated on the inside sealing up any rust and holes.Holding the tank above your head and rotating it many many times is gonna make your arms ache but its well worth the effort.
              Good luck

I am now hoping to turn my attention to the Stag again as we only have guests in the gite for 3 more weeks (don't like to make too much noise when people are on holiday)

I knew there were probably some pin holes in the tank, so I got the POR15 system in anticipation. Whipped the tank out yesterday and it seems that some of the pin holes have now joined forces to form a small hole in one corner. I have removed all paint and the tank appears to be in reasonable condition, so I have decided to treat the vulnerable exterior surfaces with 2 pack epoxy resin and once it has hardened properly prep and treat the interior with POR15.

I am hoping this will be an acceptable solution, bearing in mind the difficulty in sourcing another tank in France.

Stag is still for sale and in this months mag i have had lots of interest but understandably its a lot of money for someone to spend on a stag so no deal as yet

                    Hope all is well

My tank is still leak free years after fibreglassing... perhaps not the most ideal way of sealing, but effective and I had all the stuff on the shelf already... plus you can do it and have it back in the same day...

hi. I recently did my tank with the Frosts Tankseal kit inside and then POR15'd the exterior.
As per earlier posts, the absolute requirement is to follow instructions and take no shortcuts on process or time.
The interior was a 3-pack kit involving cleaner, rust neutraliser and then resin (which I think is actually POR15) it all worked brilliantly.
Exterior was a complete strip to bare metal, treat and Por15 (2 coats) then Hammerite (2 coats).
I can recommend the use of an aring cupboard for the curing process - can be tricky and relies on your negotiating skills but deffo worth it.
Afterwards, the tank felt completely different, a solid construction and not a thin tin box.
Good luck and hope this helps
                          John

I used my Nilfisk workshop vacuum cleaner on blow to dry out the inside of the tank between steps. No negotiation needed there.

I am struggling with the 'marine cleaning' stage and I am now paying the price for not touching the tank for many many years.

I was looking back at some old threads which were very useful, but I seem to have baffles running at right angles to each other. Is this correct, and do they run from top to bottom? I am just worrying that the POR15 will puddle there or I will not be able to clean/coat these areas properly.

Your expertise would be much appreciated, thanks Robert
